Canterbury Middle School
Speech Meet

Welcome to Canterbury Middle School’s 2016 Speech Meet.  We are very pleased to have you join us, and we hope that you enjoy your time and experiences with us.

Our meet is indeed held at our Middle School campus at 5601 Covington Road, Fort Wayne, IN.  Teams should arrive at 7:45 AM.

Events Offered: We will offer all IHSFA Middle School events in three straight rounds followed by an awards ceremony.

Extemporaneous topic
1. Host will provide a number corresponding to an article and a question.
2. Students will draw a number to receive the appropriate article.  Students will have this article as their source, or they can supplement with files or non-annotated articles, if they so choose, that they bring to the tournament.
3. No internet usage for prep, but a computer may be used to access files that are saved to a desktop or harddrive.
4. Questions will be international OR domestic in nature.
The first contestant will draw a number and receive an article with a question. The remaining contestants will draw in like manner in the order of speaking at intervals of five minutes (it is five instead of seven because MS students rarely go past 4-5 mins). The contestant will use this speech for all three rounds, as there is only one prep for the day.

Radio contestants need to bring a two minute newscast as close to 120 seconds as possible.  In addition to an on-the-spot reading, students will need to report to their prep room at 8:30 to receive a given item or service and write their promotional commercial.

Students in Discussion need to prepare for the three questions underneath the overall topic.
Overall Topic: What are the effects of privatizing in the United States?
Round 1: What are the risks and rewards of our space program?
Round 2: Would government or private corporations do a better job rehabilitating prisoners?
Round 3: Should state sponsored schools and universities be allowed to continue to privatize services, facilities, and intellectual content?

A student may have a one page, front and back, outline format notes page for EACH OF THE THREE questions to use for either when a tournament is using all three questions with one for each of the three rounds.

All other events will follow IHSFA Middle School rules.

Doubling: Students may not double in Discussion.  Extemp students may not double in Radio and vice versa.  Both Duo partners may double, however, they may not double in another duo.  Everyone doubles at their own risk; no rounds will be repeated.

Entries: Please, no more than 35 entries per school.  Drops will not be picked up.  Please, no more than 5 entries per event.  There will be no doubling.  It may be possible that in some events students from the same school may have to compete with someone from their own school.  We will try to avoid this if at all possible.  We have to limit our meet to around 250 entries.
Judges: Please bring one judge for every 5 entries or fraction thereof (6 entries = 2 judges).  High School students who have 150 NFL points may judge; please indicate student judges on your entry.  Bringing the requested number of judges ensures your team’s entry into the final sweepstakes awards.

Food: Concessions will be available for purchase.  We do ask that you take advantage of this amenity in order to supplement our program’s funds used for trophies, ribbon, and future speech pieces.  Most items run at $1.00 with slices of pizza at $2.00 and small snacks for $0.50.  Cash only please.

Awards: Team trophies will be given to the top five teams.  Ribbons for each event will be given to the top eight places.

Final Registration:  All drops must be called in by 7:00 AM to Linda Alt.  at (260) 609- 3493.  Registration will be in front of the main office from 8:00 AM to 8:30 AM.  Announcements will be held in the auditorium at 8:30  for all contestants and judges.  Extemp draw and radio prep will be held at 8:30.  Round One for all events will begin at 9:00 AM.

Buses: Please drop off students at Door 19, the main entrance to the Middle School.  If your bus would like to park at the school.  Please pull around to our Lower School parking lot by exiting the drive way, making a quick right into the Lower School campus.  This will allow for more parent parking in our limited spaces.

Contact: The evening before the tournament or the morning of the tournament, please call Miriel McFarland to report any drops at the following number: (574) 328-0951 (at any time) or (260) 436-7721 (if original number is busy the morning of the tournament).

Again, thank you for joining us in Fort Wayne.  As always, it is a pleasure working with all of you and watching our students continue to facilitate their growth in this life long pursuit and skill.
