Dear Coach and Speakers,

Welcome to the THE NOVICE OPENER at BEN DAVIS October 8th, 2016.  The meet will be held at Ben Davis High School located at 120 N Girls School Road, Indianapolis, IN 46214. The purpose of this tournament is to allow novice students to compete in their first tournament in an extremely relaxed environment.  The speech tournament is a festival, whereas the debate tournament is a tournament.

REGISTRATION DEADLINE

All Registration will be done on www.speechwire.com. No emails, faxes or paper entries will be accepted. Entries must be received by Wednesday , October 5th, 2016 by 5:00 PM.  Please make sure you included your email address with your entry so I can send you confirmation of your entry.  You will be allowed to make names changes and drops only after October 5th.

TOURNAMENT STRUCTURE

THIS IS A NOVICE TOURNAMENT ONLY.  For debate, novice is defined as a first year student or a returning student with no less than 100pts.  For speech, novice is defined as any first year student only or a returning student with less than 75pts.

Speech will consist of 4 rounds:

·         Round One – - Performance Round

·         Round Two – Onsite Coaching

·         Rounds Three and Four  - Performance Round

Entry Per Team: 60 (40 speech and 20 debate)

Event Limitation: None. You can bring as many students in any event as long as you do not breach the team cap of 40 entries.

Non- Sweeps Team Allowed: NO

Pickup Drops Allowed: NO

DRESS Code: Speech is business casual dress (no jeans or t-shirts), Debate is tournament dress (suits).

 

TOURNAMENT RULES:

·         We will follow the rules established for IHFSA with the following exceptions:

o   This will be festival scoring i.e. excellent, great, good etc – a cross walk will be provided in order to translate scoring for NSDA points.

o   Extemp will be combined and provided with two articles – 1 for rounds 1&2 and 1 for rounds 3&4.  Additional sources maybe used in comprising the speech but the source given must be used.

o   Scrips may be used in all memorized events.

DISCUSSION

We will be using the Socratic Seminar format.  Artifacts will be posted on the Speechwire for download on October 3rd, 2016. No electronic devices will be allowed to be used or seen in the round.  Students who bring electronic devices to the round will be instructed to place those devices on a table away from the competition until the round is over.

 

EXTEMP

Extemp will draw around 1 and use this speech for Rounds 1 and 3.  The second topic will be used in round 4..

DEBATE

Teams are allowed to bring entries in Lincoln Douglas Debate, Public Forum, Congressional Debate and World’s School Debate.  Teams should bring no more than 4 entries in all events except Congress (6 entries) and World School Debate (2 teams of no more than 3 students).  The entry cap for debate is 20; however, if your school is solely debate or you have a large novice team, please contact either Gary Peters at gary.peters@wayne.k12.in.us or Fred Douse @ fred.douse@wayne.k12.in.us to discuss an increase in team entry slots. TOPIC WILL BE RELEASED ON SEPTEMBER 30th, 2016.

 

Congressional Debate – Bills will be 1, 11, 12, and 14.

LINCOLN DOUGLAS TOPIC: Resolved: Civil disobedience in a democracy is morally justified.

PUBLIC FORUM: Resolved: In United States public K-12 schools, the probable cause standard ought to apply to searches of students.

Round One for All EVENTS

 

BALLOT RETURN

All judges should return their signed and properly scored ballots and completed critique sheets at the end of each round to the ballot table located in the S HALL.  Judges are expected to stay for the entire meet and the entire round. DEBATE COACHES: Ballots will be available throughout the day for you to record scores as we go.

 

CONCESSIONS

There should be no leaving the building as food for students will be served in the cafeteria. Complimentary food for judges, coaches and bus drivers will be in the teachers cafeteria.

 

JUDGE REQUIREMENTS – STUDENTS MAY JUDGE

Each school MUST bring one judge for every 5 contestants and every fraction thereof.  CRITERIA for student judges – must be a second year student with 150 points or more.

AWARDS

All students will receive ribbons or certificates on the speech side.  Ribbons and Trophies will be awarded for Novice debate.
