Greensburg Invitational Speech Tournament

November 23, 2013

Entries due by 6:00 P.M. on Friday, November 15

Greensburg Community High School will hold its seventeenth speech tournament on Saturday,  November 23, 2013. We would be very pleased to have your team participate in our meet. Preregistration is on www.speechwire.com and due by Friday, November 15, by 6:00 p.m..   Please be certain that you include all requested contact information!   Late entries will not be admitted -- you may come and pick up drops, but otherwise no additional entries will be allowed after the deadline.  Also, since our facilities are a bit small, we must limit the meet to approximately 400 entries; therefore entries will be accepted on a first come, first served basis.   The first round will begin at 8:30 A.M.  The first Extemp draw is at 8:00 A.M.

Our building is a bit chilly compared to most schools, so you might want to wear an extra layer!

Registration is from 7:00-7:45.  A mandatory judge meeting will start at 8:00 A.M. in the auditorium; a mandatory contestant meeting (for all competitors other than extemp) will start at 8:00 A.M. in the cafeteria.

Extemp contestants will meet in the library at 7:45 A.M.  Extemp draw is at 8:00 A.M.  The first round will begin at 8:30 A.M.    There will be four straight rounds and no final, with rounds running at 8:30, 9:45, 11:00, and 12:15.

Entries -- No more than 40 entries per school will be allowed.  Pick-ups are available on a first-come, first-served basis on the morning of the meet, but they do not count toward sweepstakes.  You may enter up to 5 competitors in each event, but your total number of entries (including pick-ups) must not exceed 40.  If you enter more than 5 competitors in any one event, only 5 of your entries will compete in that event -- sorry.

Events -- We will offer humorous, dramatic, declamation, discussion, prose, poetry, original oratory, impromptu, international extemp, domestic extemp, scripted duo, memorized duo, original performance, radio, and congress.  Congress will debate #12, 14, 3, and 7.

Radio rounds are as follows: radio meeting for all contestants @ 8:15

Round 1 - 2 minute news (provided by the student)

Round 2 – 1 minute  contestant written commercial on a National Product

    Round 3 – 2 minute  contestant-written editorial

    Round 4-  On-the-spot

Indiana High School Forensic Association rules will be followed in all events with the exceptions noted in this invitation.

.

Discussion will be using Socratic Seminar with a 10 minute prep period prior to the round

Doubling – Doubling is allowed in all events with the following exceptions:

                Students may not double in discussion and congress;

Extemp competitors may not double in radio.  Students in extemp who are doubling may have to give up part of their

                                prep time.

Radio competitors may not double in extemp.  Students in radio who are doubling may have to give up part of their

                                prep time.

No students can compete in more than one type of duo, including original performance.

Both members of a duo may double.

ALL doubling is done at the student’s own risk.

If I need additional rooms, impromptu may be run in half-hour flights, in which case doubling students will go to impromptu as nearly as possible to the time listed on their schematics; if flighting is not necessary, then students doubling in impromptu are to go to impromptu last and stay until the round is over.

Judges -- You are REQUIRED to bring one judge for every five entries or fraction thereof, according to the original number of entries on your preregistration sheet.  Any team failing to bring the required number of judges will be eliminated from all awards.  Also, please make sure your judges are equipped with stopwatches!

Food -- Concessions will be available from 7:30 A.M. until awards time in the student cafeteria.  No restaurants are within walking distance, so please plan to eat with us; concessions profits help offset the cost of the meet for us, so your support is much appreciated.

Awards -- Team trophies will be given to the top 10 teams.  Ribbons will be awarded to the top 10 in each event.  Sweepstakes will be awarded as follows:  10 points for 1st place, 9 points for 2nd place, 8 points for 3rd place, etc.  The host school is eligible for all awards.

Format -- Registration is from 7:15-8:00.  Extemp draw is at 8:00 A.M.  The first round will begin at 8:30 A.M.    There will be four straight rounds and no final, with rounds running at 8:30, 9:45, 11:00, and 12:15.

Registration -- Everything is located in the high school building.  Registration packets will be located in the high school’s main office, which is located on the opposite side of the building from the cafeteria.

Remember, your preregistration is due by 6:00 P.M. on Friday, November 15, 2013, via www.speechwire.com, and entries will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.   All requested contact information for head coaches must be filled out.

Directions -- Greensburg is located 40 miles southeast of Indianapolis at the junction of Interstate 74 (exit #134 - turn south) and Highway 3.

If you are unacquainted with the high school’s location, the easiest way to find us is for you first to find the McDonald’s and Taco Bell restaurants located on the southeast corner of the stoplight just south of Interstate 74 on Highway 3 (on the west-side corner is a Burger King.)  Turn east (the road then curves to the south), going past Taco Bell and McDonald’s on the right, and Arby’s on the left.  Keep going on the same street until you have passed a Ponderosa on the right.  At the next possible left (about half a block beyond the Ponderosa -- there’s a quick lube on the left), turn left onto Montgomery Road.  Go straight on Montgomery Road; you will pass a small housing addition on the left.  You will pass the turn for Davidson Street on the right.  The next possible right-hand turn is the back drive to Greensburg High School.  Turn right; head straight down the drive -- you’ll pass an apartment complex on the right and our soccer and football fields on the left.  The high school parking lot will be directly ahead -- drop students at the entrance closest to where you’ve entered the parking lot.  Registration packets should be picked up by 7:45 A.M. in the building’s main office, which is located on the opposite side of the building from the cafeteria

Please do not park buses in the drive in front of the main entrance.  After dropping off students, drive all buses to the parking lot area closest to the football field.
