Artifact 1: Disability Product Twitter Thread

https://threadreaderapp.com/thread/1169777933302386689.html

Today in the shower caddy section, I fantasized about starting a podcast called,

"WELL MAYBE IT WASN'T MADE FOR YOU, SUSAN!"

Each episode would just be me sharing about a product or service that people mock, or judge as lazy, that's actually life changing for #disabled people. Today's episode would have been about waterproof holders that let you bring your phone into the shower. A woman in the aisle loudly remarked to her friend how ridiculous it is that "ppl these days are so glued to their smart phones that they cant even manage a shower without it." You know who showers with their cellphone? I do. I used to have to choose between showering only when my husband was home in case I slipped or couldn't get back up from my shower seat, or taking the risk that I would fall and be stuck there until he came home that night.

Thanks to the waterproof holder I bought earlier this year, I was able to start bringing my phone into the shower with me, and it was AMAZING how life changing that one small sliver of accessibility was. I'm showering MUCH more often, without sacrificing my safety. Trust me: I would have no trouble filling an entire season of episodes with stories like this though. Many of the infomercial products folks love to mock were explicitly designed for #disabled people, but they market them to the general public to try to help turn a better profit.

Other convenience products like pre-sliced fruits and veggies, or services that get labeled as "lazy" or "peak privilege" (think apps like instacart, doordash, taskrabbit, etc?) They are essential accessibility tools for #disabled folks like me. Im not actually going to start a podcast, but if I had unlimited time/resources I'd be tempted to give this one a go.

Instead, I recommend people add more #disabled voices to their social media feeds & their social circles. Learn to see the world from our perspective more often. Y’all, the responses to this have blown me away!!! I never expected to be saying this, but I’m *actually* considering starting this show. ?

Can anyone point me to resources to research what that would entail? I have NO idea what this would take or if I could even manage it.

And thanks to a hilariously genius response from @rollwthepunches, I’m thinking I would title the show:

“Not-So-Lazy Susan”

No promises, my plate is pretty full promoting my book at the moment, but I’m giving SERIOUS consideration to making this show a reality in 2020.
