CAMPUS HOUSEKEEPING

Our 70-acre campus is collegiate in style, featuring old buildings on a quad format. Please respect our property. Trash should be placed in the receptacles provided both inside and outside. Students should not enter classrooms until their judge is present. Do not eat or drink in the classrooms. Respect the classrooms of teachers; avoid moving furniture (unless when absolutely necessary). Smoking is prohibited on our campus. If you must smoke, you must be off

the campus (including the campuses of the two neighboring schools). Leaving campus for any reason during the tournament is highly discouraged; we will NOT postpone a round if you are off campus. Teams are asked to not bring in food that is from off campus. We keep our tournament entry fees low by relying on the sales of food. Please respect the planning, work, and expense in providing the choices we offer in our lounge.

EVENT DIVISIONS

All students are eligible for the Varsity division. Students in their first year of debate are classified as Novice. Students who have done speech or debate in the past, but are new to an event, are not novice. In partner events, both students must be eligible for the event division. Oratorical Declamation is available to 9th and 10th grade students only.

EVENTS, PATTERNS & CROSS ENTRY INFORMATION

Varsity Public Forum Debate and Varsity Lincoln-Douglas Debate will run on its own pattern. Rounds will be flighted.

Students in flight B should report to the room at the beginning of each round. If the flight B teams are present before the Flight A teams, the round should commence with Flight B first.

In the following events, students may enter into two (2) events in each pattern, with the exception of Extemporaneous Speaking. If a student enters into Extemp, they may do two events in the Beta Pattern, and in either novice debate event, in which they may only cross enter into the opposite pattern.

There is no double entry in Lincoln-Douglas,  Public Forum, or Congressional Debate.

ETHICS

Myers Park Debate upholds ethics to an extremely high standard and the same will be true at the Laird Lewis Tournament. Plagiarism and falsifying of statistics/pieces will not be permitted. Students cannot be recorded in any way without permission of the participants. Evidence is considered personal property and cannot be copied, photographed, or reproduced in any way without  the direct permission of the owners AND their coaches. All students must have  research/statistics/cuttings/speeches, etc. present at the tournament in the event of a challenge. If a challenge is presented, and this cannot be provided, a competitor will be disqualified. Violations of these norms by school judges/coaches will result in the entire squad being asked to withdraw from the tournament.  Decisions will be made by the individual Tab Room directors.

FORFEITURE RULE

Competitors and judges are expected to start each round on time. Students who fail to report to their competition room within fifteen (15) minutes after the listed start time shall be disqualified by the tab room, except in cases where students are double entered in the round and have placed their identifying information on the board. In debate, they will be awarded a loss. In speech, they will be awarded a rank of 6. They will receive no speaker points for the round.

FLIGHTED ROUNDS

In order to maximize entry opportunities we follow a single-flight, patterned one-hour round format. Contestants and judges are asked to be present for all rounds early and to vacate the classroom before the next round begins. NO ORAL CRITIQUES IN ANY NOVICE DEBATE EVENT OR SPEECH EVENT SHOULD OCCUR

Students who are double-entered in a single pattern should follow these instructions to ensure a smooth tournament:

1. Note down which rooms you are going to in each round.

2. Go to the round you are the lowest speaker in (e.g. if you are 1st speaker in OO and 3rd speaker in DI, go to your DI room first) and…

3. Write your name, code and title on the board followed by “XE”

4. Immediately go to the event you are the highest speaker in and write your name, code, and title on the board followed by “XE”

5. Judges must allow “XE” students to speak first in the room regardless of their actual speaking position. Remind your judge in this event that you need to speak first (unless another XE student has a higher speaking position than you).

6. As soon as your performance is complete in your first event, ask your judge to excuse you and move immediately to your other event. DO NOT ENTER the room if someone is performing.

REMEMBER: It is your responsibility to be in each room on time. Each round only lasts one hour, do not delay! Judges will be as accommodating as they can but, but rounds cannot go over time! It is the competitor’s responsibility to complete each round. JUDGES: if a student has written their name on the board and placed XE next to it, please wait for them to return before you start the round.

  • Independent entries are allowed at the Laird Lewis Invitational Tournament.  However, any independent entry must provide proof from their current principal that they are in good standing with their school and that they have the permission from their principal to attend the tournament.  This proof must be in writing and signed by the principal.  It may be scanned and emailed to lairdlewisinvitational@gmail.com or faxed to Andrew West at (980)343-5803.
  • All entries, both traditional and independent, must be supervised by an adult over 21 at all times while in attendance at the Laird Lewis Invitational.  It is preferred that this individual be an employee of the school from which the student attends.  The Laird Lewis Invitational, Myers Park Debate Boosters, Myers Park High School, and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools reserves the right to both deny entry and/or send home early (with no refund provided) any entries that attend the tournament unsupervised.

PARTICIPATION AGREEMENT

To the extent permitted by law, each school registered to attend the Laird Lewis Invitational Tournament agrees to protect, indemnify, defend and hold harmless Myers Park High School, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, Myers Park Debate Boosters, or the Myers Park High School Speech and Debate Team, and their representatives, provided that with respect to officers, directors, advisors, employees, and agents, such individuals are acting within the scope of their

employment or agency as applicable, against all claims, losses, or damages to persons or property, governmental charges or fines, and costs (including reasonable attorney’s fees or event entry fees), arising out of or connected with the event, except those claims arising out of intentional misconduct.

Myers Park High School Speech and Debate Team and The Laird Lewis Invitational Tournament reserve the ability to limit or deny the privilege of attendance and competition at the Laird Lewis Invitational Tournament to any individual whose presence makes tournament staff, directors, or coordinators feel threatened or intimidated in any way. The decision to deny entry is the sole discretion of the tournament directors, and will only be evoked in extreme cases which

threaten the well being of tournament personnel; schools who register for the tournament, in so doing, express their intention to respect and abide by this policy. Any school found to be in violation of this agreement will have all entries immediately dropped from the tournament and will not be invited to attend the tournament the following year.
