Extemp/Radio

Extemp Topic Areas for individual rounds will be posted on December 6, 2013 on speechwire.com.

Radio Speaking

General Instructions:

  • Contestants will create and deliver a radio broadcast on the topic areas below – no scripts are provided by the tournament.
  • Speeches are limited to 3 minutes. Timing is very important in Radio Speaking, so no grace period is allowed. Students should bring a digital time keeping device to the round.
  • Content may be created by the student or pulled from newspapers, magazines, and websites. Student is not required to provide sources.
  • Students are not seen by the judge and are evaluated solely on what is heard. Students should use contrast and effective speaking devices (pitch, volume, rate, pausing, paraphrasing, stress, tone, etc.) as well as effective sound devices such as alliteration and attention to the sound and meaning of every word.
  • Speeches may be read from a script or notes, but should demonstrate an ability to adlib and provide creative, varied and smooth transition.
  •  Broadcasts should capture the listener's attention and include station identification, projection of an on-air personality, and address the topic of the round. Students may—but are not required to—include commercials, multiple character voices, etc.

Topic areas for each round will be posted on December 6, 2013 on speechwire.com.
