Impromptu Instructions

Chanhassen Speech Tournament

Impromptu is designed to challenge competitors to create an interpretation of the prompt and use it to create an argument or thesis that the speech will support.

 Format:

  • Prompts – Competitors will draw once they enter the NSDA campus room. The judge will walk them through the process. They will get three choices.

  • Time – Competitors are provided seven minutes to make their selection, prepare their speech, and deliver the speech. When they receive the 3 options, the judge should begin the timer. Judges are strongly encouraged to provide time signals.

Judging Criteria:

  • Comprehension – The judge should evaluate whether the contestant understood and was able to explain the meaning of the given quotation.

  • Content – The judge should evaluate the competitors on their use of logic, reasoning, and examples to support their analyses of the quotations.

  • Creativity – The judge should evaluate the competitors’ creativity and originality as they explore the quotations.

  • Judging directions can be found here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1oc6PJ58I49UtdjXtFy0eGbUSI8Yns9JnMcUxcI9mYdM/edit?usp=sharing

 Other Notes:

  • Actual speaking order will likely vary significantly from what is listed on the ballots. Judges should remain in the NSDA Campus Room until all competitors have had a chance to speak, recognizing that there may be some periods of downtime between speeches.
