                                  CULVER ACADEMIES SPEECH

Dear Coaches:

 

You are invited to the Culver Academies Colonel William F. Northam Memorial Speech Invitational on Saturday, December at The Culver Academies.  Registration is due on MONDAY, DECEMBER 2 AT 6PM (EASTERN TIME)We are using Speechwire, so please ensure that your entry is as accurate as possible.

 

PLEASE NOTE:  WE HAVE LIMITED SPACE THIS YEAR DUE TO CONSTRUCTION AND HOSTING THE SAT.  WE WILL HAVE TO CUT-OFF REGISTRATION AT 300 ENTRIES.  ONCE WE HIT THAT NUMBER, ALL OTHER REGISTRATIONS WILL BE RETURNED WITH REGRETS.

 

REGISTRATION will begin at 7:00AM EST in the Academies Dining Hall with a judges meeting occurring at 8:00AM and Round 1 starting at 8:30AM that morning.  Directions are included below so that you are familiar with our campus.  We are on EST and not Chicago time.

 

ROUNDS:  All events will go 4 straight rounds.  There will be no finals.  We hope to start awards somewhere around 3:00PM.

 

DIVISIONS:  Novice=First year Speech competitor.  Varsity=Everyone else. 

 

EVENTS:  We will offer the 14 IHSFA sectional events.   

 

DISCUSSION: Discussion will be using Socratic Seminar format. Artifacts will be posted on Speechwire on Monday, December 2 after 6pm. 

 

RADIO: Contestants need to bring a five-minute news program to be used for both rounds 1 and 3 that includes a music intro and outro as well as a commercial.  Choices for music: Alternative—Young the Giant, Nothing But Thieves, Weezer; Classic Rock--- Alice Cooper, Black Sabbath, Janis Joplin; Country— Runaway June, Blake Shelton, Carly Pearce. The commercial topic for news program round will be any nationally known breakfast cereal product. Round two will be a two-minute ORIGINAL (written by the student based on research and opinion) editorial about climate change. Round four will be 2-minute on the spot with 2-minute prep at the tournament.  STUDENTS DOUBLING IN RADIO SHOULD GO TO RADIO FIRST!

 

EXTEMP will draw first and third rounds and may use either topic for the final.  Topics will come from Speechgeek, Champcraft or National Federation Topics.  Extemp will compete in the Huffington Library.

 

Team entries are limited to a total of 40, with a maximum of 4 in each event, per division (4 novice and 4 varsity entries in prose is legal).  Extra non-sweeps competitors can be entered.  If you have a LARGE number of non-sweeps, please contact Mitch Barnes immediately before you register to discuss these numbers and possible implications.  Competitors may double at their own risk.  All events may double with the exception of DiscussionDuo competitors, including O.P. duos, may double in another duo with the same partner, but not with the same material.  Extempers may not double in the opposite extemp event (USX’ers can’t double in I.X.)  We reserve the right to combine events or divisions if small numbers make this appropriate, but they will be divided back for awards. 

 

.JUDGES:  Bring 1 judge for every 5 entries or fraction thereof.  CRITIQUES WILL BE GIVEN.  Please train and bring judges who are willing to write clear, educational rationale for ranks or suggestions for improvement.  Competitors need insightful critiques early in the seasonA blank critique sheet or a “Good job…7th place” is NOT an acceptable critique.  Those schools that do not bring the correct number of judges will not be able to compete for sweepstakes.

 

 

 

 

 

 

FOOD:  Don’t plan on leaving the campus.  Food will be available throughout the day at the Lay Student Center, located below the Dining Hall.  If your team wishes to eat lunch in our Dining Hall, there is a $6.00 all-you-can-eat charge per person.  There is a $5.00 all-you-can-eat charge for breakfast.  Food for lunch can also be purchased in The Shack, located below the Dining Hall.  Teams are welcome to bring their own food as well.  There will be a judges lounge available in the morning with doughnuts, coffee, etc. 

 

Please inform your judges that they will need to bring $5.00 (or $11.00) to eat at our Dining Hall.  Being a boarding school, we regret that we don’t have a booster or parents club that can provide lunch for judges.  But they can have seconds and thirds with our AYCE Dining Hall.

 

NO SMOKING: Our buildings and campus are smoke-free areas.

 

AWARDS: Trophies will be given to the top 6 teams. Ribbons will be given to the top eight in each event.  Culver Academies will be competing for a team trophy.  Varsity and novice will use the 8, 7, 6….scoring

Take U.S. 31 due south past U.S. 30

Continue south on U.S. 31 to Route 10

Turn right and head west on Route 10

You’ll go through four 90-degree angle turns

Continue west on Route 10

Once you’ve crossed Route 117, you’re at the Culver Academies campus

Continue west on Route 10 to Academy Road

Turn left on Academy Road and head south

Look for the CULVER REGISTRATION sign.  It’s pointing at our Dining Hall.  That’s where registration is taking place

 

Your bus, after dropping off students, can head south then west on Academy Road and park near Eppley Auditorium or down in the parking lot of our motels.

 

 

DIRECTIONS TO CULVER FROM THE WEST/NORTHWEST

Head east on U.S. 30 to Route 23

Turn right and head south on Route 23

Continue south on Route 23 to Route 8

Turn left on Route 8 and head east to Route 17

Turn right onto Route 17 and head south to Culver and Route 10

Turn left onto Route 10 and head east for about ¼ to ½ mile, looking for Academy Road on your right

Turn right on Academy Road and head south

Look for the CULVER REGISTRATION sign.  It’s pointing at our Dining Hall.  That’s where registration is taking place

Turn left and head west on Route 10

Turn right on Route 10 and head east

After the first 4-way Stop, (about 1/4 to ½ mile), look for Academy Road on your right

Turn right on Academy Road and head south

Take Route 43 North out of Lafayette

Continue heading north as Route 43 becomes Route 421 North

Take Route 421North to Route 14 East

Take Route 14 East to and through Winamac, IN and on to Route 17 North

Head north on Route 17 to Route 10 and Culver, IN

Turn right on Route 10 and head east
