2020 Big Red Tournament of Love

The Cornell Speech and Debate Society welcomes you to Ithaca for the revival of the previously titled, "Tournament of Love." After nearly a decade since hosting this tournament, we are excited to share some Big Red love with the forensics community. Our tournament is a part of a swing co-hosted with SNAFU. While both halves are hosted on Cornell's campus, the Sunday half will be hosted by SNAFU staff. To help spread the love, we will be providing lunch for our portion of the tournament....for FREE! Don't worry, we will try to accommodate most allergies/food restrictions. Also, we have a hotel block at the Best Western in Ithaca for $117 per room for those that are interested. Just tell them you are with the Big Red Tournament and they should apply the discounted rate! If you have questions about accommodations or tournament logistics shoot me a text or email at 6308656108 or bj272@cornell.edu. Please see below for tournament specifics.

Love,
Brandon Johnson
Assistant Director of Speech and Debate Programs

Competition Rules

1.  AFA-NIET rules and descriptions will govern all AFA-NIET events. Phi Rho Pi rules will govern IPDA. Please make note of these rules, as they may differ from tournaments in your region.  There will be no C/X in the final round of Extemp.

2.  As per new AFA-NIET language, the use of the Internet and/or electronic files are permitted in Extemp. Cornell will attempt to provide Internet access, but cannot guarantee it.

3.  We will offer one division of Individual IPDA debate. Please make note of the following rules:

            a. Debaters will be presented with five resolutions. Both debaters will alternatively strike two resolutions each, starting with the negative. The 30-minute preparation period begins at the first negative strike.  We will follow the time constraints set forth by the IPDA: 5-2-6-2-3-5-3.

            b. During prep time, students are allowed to access any prepared material and/or electronic materials.  This includes access to the Internet. In addition, students are allowed to prep with other students, but NOT COACHES.

            c. All preliminary rounds will be randomly preset.  Brackets will NOT be broken in elimination rounds.

            d.  Topic draw will take place in IPDA prep. Further info can be found at www.ipdadebate.info or just call me!

5.  NO disclosure in debate rounds.  Please turn in ballots before offering any oral critiques.
