2019 Broward High School Novice Championship | Fort Lauderdale High School | Saturday May 11, 2019

The Speech and Debate team from Fort Lauderdale High School invites your team to the 2019 Broward High School Novice Championship on Saturday May 11, 2019. Please read the following information carefully before entering students into the tournament.

EVENTS OFFERED: Public Forum Debate, Lincoln Douglas Debate, Student Congress, Policy Debate, Extemporaneous Speaking, Original Oratory, Informative Speaking, Duo Interpretation,  Program Oral Interpretation, Dramatic Interpretation, Humorous Interpretation, Declamation, and Impromptu Speaking.

ENTRY LIMITS: 6 in each event; 10 in Congress;  Double Entry permitted in IE only--No extra charge 

ENTRY FEE: $20.00 per student –includes lunch - payable to Fort Lauderdale High School Debate. Entry fee is charged from the time you enter a student on the web site.

JUDGE OBLIGATIONS: 1 judge for every 5 IE (including Congress), and 1 judge for every 2 debaters or fraction thereof, but you cannot mix Policy, PFD, or LD judges. Please make certain you have the correct number of debate judge. Schools with more than 35 IE competitors will need only 7 IE judges. High School student judges may be used if the student is a 11-12 grader and has 150 NSDA points or more.

ENTRY DEADLINE: Entries will be accepted until 5:00pm on Tuesday May 7, 2019.  Name changes and drops may be made until Friday, May 10, 2019 at 8:00 a.m. You will be charged the entry fee for any student originally entered. Drops after Tuesday at 5:00 p.m. and before Friday at 8:00 a.m. will be charged the entry fee.  After 8:00 a.m. on Friday, drops will incur $10.00 in addition to the entry fee. Drops on the day of tournament or “discovered” during the actual tournament will result in the entry fee forfeiture plus a $20.00 penalty. We have a few judges for $40 if you are short.

LUNCH: Please order sandwiches for your students. They can choose Tuna, Turkey, Italian, or Veggie. The cost of student lunches is included in the entry fee. You must also order for all judges, student judges, adults and/or coaches. Please remember to order lunch for your judges/coaches separately; cost for lunch for judges/coaches is $7.00. Judge and coach lunches will be automatically added if you choose to ignore this item. 

FINAL REGISTRATION:  Registration begins promptly at 7:15 a.m. and will close at 7:45 a.m. in the Fort Lauderdale High School School Cafeteria. Please be prompt.

SCHEDULE: All events other than Policy and Student Congress will feature 5 rounds of competition. Policy will have 3/4 rounds. Student Congress will have 2 preliminary rounds and a Final Round. Rounds will begin at 8:00 a.m. with Extemp Prep and will run 3 rounds of competition and 2 sessions of Congress prior to lunch. We anticipate awards to begin around 5:00 p.m.    Please inform students and parents accordingly.

AWARDS: This year we will feature awards for the top 6 students in all events.

FORFEIT RULES:  All rounds will be subject to the judge-arrival-plus-ten-minutes forfeit rule for students.

Lincoln Douglas Debate:

Resolved: The illegal use of drugs ought to be treated as a matter of public health, not of criminal justice.

Public Forum Debate:

Resolved: The United Nations should grant India permanent membership on the Security Council.

Policy Debate:

Resolved: The United States federal government should substantially reduce its restrictions on legal immigration to the United States.

Student Congress: Legislation is due by Monday, April 29th and will be distributed ASAP.  Submit legislation in a WORD document to james.wakefield@browardschools.com Please limit legislation to two per school.  If there isn't enough legislation by 5pm, the tournament will add as needed.  THERE WILL BE NO EXTENDED DEADLINE.
