Hello Speech Colleagues!

I would like to offer a warm welcome to you and your team and invite you to the 21st Annual Roseville ROSEBOWL Tournament on Saturday, March 16, 2019 at Roseville Area High School.

We will be hosting all 13 MSHSL categories and both MSHSL and NSDA rules will be honored.  We have opted to NOT offer Program Oral Interpretation (POI) since it is not a MSHSL category and the NSDA National Qualifying Tournament will already be done by March 16.
We will allow double entering (including discussion and a non-draw event, but not in discussion and a draw event nor two draw events).

We will offer 3 preliminary rounds of competition, Honor Finals & Finals in all categories (all students will compete in one division).  I am excited to report that the Rosebowl is a National Individual Events Tournament of Champions (NIETOC) bid tournament! For many of you, this will be one last chance to earn enough bids to qualify for NIETOC! Due to this, we may offer more final rounds in Humor, Duo, Drama, Extemp Speaking, Prose and Oratory, depending on registration size. If more final rounds are offered, they will take place at the same time as the other final rounds and will not add to the length of the tournament.
We will offer awards to all finalists. We will also offer 5 team sweepstakes trophies in the Large school division, and a trophy for Small School Champion.

Most of the information you might need can be found on the SpeechWire web-site. If you have any other questions, please contact me at jodi.kyllonen@isd623.org   (651) 261-1582
I look forward to hosting you and your team on March 16 at Roseville HS!

Sincerely,

Jodi Kyllonen, Roseville Speech Director

ENTRIES :

You may enter as many students as you wish in any category. You may make any changes to your registration up until 5:00 pm on Friday, March 15. You may still make drops after that deadline, but you will be responsible for your entry fees at that time, regardless of drops between Friday afternoon and Saturday morning.

Checks should be sent to: Roseville Speech | Attn: Jodi Kyllonen | 1240 Co Rd B2 West | Roseville MN 55113

TOURNAMENT CHECK-IN

Check in will take place between 7:15 a.m. and 8:00 a.m.   You are encouraged to make changes online or text or call ahead -- 651-261-1582 -- with any last minute drops that morning.  This will speed up our site scheduling process that morning.  RAHS has two entrances and parking lots. Please use the lower lot (gym entrance).  Registration will take place outside the cafeteria, up the stairs from the North Gym Lobby.  Your team's home base will be in the North Gym.

We will post schedules outside the cafeteria, in the North Gym lobby and in the judges' lounge. Maps and Info sheets will be available in your team's registration packets.  Judges will be using the e-balloting process (more information regarding e-balloting can be found under "Documents for Download" on SpeechWire. A variety of concessions will be available throughout the day in our cafeteria. We will have hot coffee all day and lots of food, including breakfast and lunch, throughout the day for our judges and coaches.

JUDGES:

You will need one judge for every 6 entries or fraction thereof.  All judges are expected to be available through final rounds.

We schedule the judges based on the number of students you originally register; we cannot make accommodations Saturday morning because of drops.

Please indicate any of your judges who are unaffiliated with your school or students in any way – we encourage you to bring as many unaffiliated judges as you are able.

Judges will be using the e-balloting process; all judges will need a smart device to enter their ranks/ballot on-line.  It is recommended that each judge brings a laptop/portable computer to write critque comments on-line; there will be a limited number of paper critiques available for those judges who do not enter critiques on-line.

CATEGORY INFORMATION:

Both MSHSL and NSDA rules will be honored. Please make sure your judges are aware of this.

We are NOT offering POI (since Nat Quals will be over by this time and POI is not a MSHSL category).

Since this is a NIETOC bid tournament, students with poetry pieces can be entered in Dramatic Interpretation (prose is it's own NIETOC bid category now!).

Discussion tasks will be brought to the round by each judge.  Discussion tasks will be taken from each section of the outline.

We will provide screens for projectors in all Informative Rooms.

ALL DRAWS: Each of the three draw events will draw fresh for each round, including all three prelims and finals.

Storytelling: Stories will be taken from the entire list.

Extemp Reading: Stories and poems will be taken from the entire lists.

Extemp Speaking:  There will be separate topic areas for each round. Topics will be posted in the draw area.

Laptops are allowed in our Extemp Speaking prep/draw area. We cannot ensure that students will be able to connect to the internet during their prep time, so it is encourage that students have have files stored on laptops, external hard drives and USB drives. We cannot guarantee access to electric outlets, so plan to run on battery power. Any computer malfunction is the competitor's responsibility and prep will not be extended for computer problems.
