Welcome to the 5th annual SSP Packer Middle School/Jr High Invitational on February 7, 2019.

There will be 3 rounds of competition and no finals, beginning at 3:45.  It is our goal to have everyone on the road by 8:15, or shortly thereafter. Depending on building usage that day, teams will EITHER use the cafeteria OR each team will be assigned a classroom space for their home base. Rather than a traditional concessions stand, we will be offering Pizza Hut pizza (sausage, cheese, or pepperoni) at cost, with a small surcharge for a modest tip. (probably $8.50/pizza).  You may order the pizzas for your team via our site on speechwire. I ask that you enter a preliminary pizza order by Tuesday, Feb 5 so that I can give Pizza Hut an estimate.  Students can purchase other treats and beverages from one of the school vending machines or bring their own sack lunch. Awards will be held in the Lecture Hall.  We will have snacks and a light supper for the coaches and judges.

SCHEDULE:

2:45-3:15     Registration will be in front of the high school offices. It should be close to where you enter the building, and I promise that there will be signs.

3:45              Round 1 for all events

4:30             Draws for Round 2

5:00              Round 2

A little extra time is planned before Round 3 to allow for a supper break.

6:00              Draws for Round 3

6:30              Round 3

7:45              Awards

ENTRIES:

The fee is $3.50/competitor, with each duo entry being $7.00.  If you have any double-entries, it will be on you and the student to make it work.  We have a fairly tight schedule, so there isn't much wiggle room.

Entry deadline:

Please submit your initial entries by 3 pm Monday, February 4.  Fees will be set at 4:00 Tuesday, February 5, with the sole addition of any adds made afterwards.  Please make adds/drops throughout the week when you know of them.  PLEASE make any last-minute changes on Speechwire BEFORE you leave school on Thursday afternoon to travel to South St Paul.

Special category-specific  instructions:

Discussion: The discussion schedule suggests that we Part I of the outline, which is the "individual and group" issues of the outline.

DRAW EVENTS:We will hold draws for rounds 2 and 3, but come prepared with a speech/story/cutting of your choice for round 1.  Please let your student know that they will not be able to repeat that selection in rounds 2 and 3.

Extemp reading PROSE draws will come from the first EIGHT stories from the Bradbury book, as listed on the MSHSL guide.  POETRY draws will come from the "Creation" section of the poetry book, pg 19-32.

Storytelling draws will come from stories 1-8, as found on the MSHSL list.

FOOD:

Please plan with your team the amount of pizza to order. Speechwire allows us to use its site to plan for food.  I BEG you to place a preliminary order by Tuesday so that I can give Pizza Hut a ballpark number on the amount of pizza we will need.  I am charging only enough to cover the cost of the pizza, plus tax and a small tip for delivery. Students can also purchase other snacks or beverages from our vending machines. Of course, students always have the option of bringing their own supper.

JUDGES:

Your school must provide one judge for every six entries or fraction thereof.  Please indicate each judge's preference as you enter them on speechwire. If you forget, I will change their preference to EITHER.  Experienced senior high speech team members may be used as judges.  I might ihave a handful of extra judges available, but let me know in advance.  The cost for a judge is $60.  There will be a lounge for coaches and judges in our FACS room, A149. We will probably be serving homemade soup as the entree.
