Lois Hodgins Memorial Tournament

At Eau Claire Memorial High School

2225 Keith Street, Eau Claire, WI 54701

Dear Coach,

You and your team are invited to the Lois Hodgins Memorial Tournament at Eau Claire Memorial High School on Saturday, February 23, 2019. The team has chosen to dedicate our tournament to the memory of long-time Memorial coach, Lois Hodgins, after she passed away last spring. She encouraged the students to grow into better performers, speakers, and individuals

This tournament is WFCA and WHSFA friendly and is open for students to single, double, or triple enter. There will be awards at the end of the tournament following three prelim and one final round. There will be team awards for small teams (20 or fewer entries depending on how many teams we have) and large teams based on the top 25 entries from each school.

Entry fees will be $6 per individual event and $10 per group event. Please bring one judge for every 5 entries that you will be bringing. Please let me know if you have difficulty with finding clean judges (we recommend bringing no more than 5 affiliated—non-clean—judges). We may be able to find solutions. Hired judges will be available for $100 per judge needed. (We can find alternative solutions if needed.)

Please have your team registered by Friday, February 15th, 2019 at 7:00pm. Entry drops close on February 22nd, 2019 at 3:00pm. All drops after this time will neither reduce your fees nor your judging requirements. Checks are payable to Memorial High School.

Please reach out or call if you have any questions.

Please text/call in your drops by 7:15am Arrival at the school is between 7:30 and 8:10am (or when you can get there, as the weather can be unpredictable). First round begins at 8:45am.

Sincerely,

Additional Tournament Guidelines

(Same as Eau Claire North Tournament…Thanks Scott!)

We welcome WFCA and WHSFA schools, and to facilitate the slight differences in rules we have a basic overall philosophy rule from either organization will be honored. If an element of a performance is allowed in either WFCA or WHSFA, it will be allowed at this tournament. Some examples of blending the rules include:

  1. Two speakers will be allowed in Demonstration Speaking. The entry fee for Demonstration will be the same prices as other individual events regardless of a Demonstration entry having one or two speakers. If there are two speakers under one entry, include both names in the box when submitting your entry to Speechwire.
  2. Group Interpretation and Play Acting will have 12 minute time limits (WFCA changed to 10 minutes for 2019; WHSFA is 12).
  3. One 4x6 notecard will be permitted in Oratory. Other categories that allow notes have no specific limits, formats, or dimensions.
  4. There will be no separate Public Address event, but students in Public Address can be entered in Oratory, and the judges will be alerted to this. Please email cpankratz@ecasd.us with specific information regarding this.
  5. Chairs, etc. MAY be used in Solo Acting and Group Interp. Optional speaker’s/ reader’s stand may be used in the categories involving scripts or notes.
  6. We will NOT be separating Solo Acting Humorous and Solo Acting Serious.
  7. Storytelling: the order of the stories will be set by random draw the morning of the tournament prior to the 8:30 judges meeting. For each round, everyone will be presenting the same story category.
  8. A printed list of works cited does not need to be presented to the judge, but sources should be cited contextually during the speech.

*For the WHSFA rules, go to http://whsfa.org

*For Oratorical Declamation rules, open to freshmen & sophomores only, go to http://ncfl.org

Registration Limitations

  • Unlimited number of entries are allowed in each category.
  • Double or triple entries are allowed (students may compete in multiple events).
  • Please report how many of your judges are clean (have no school or team affiliation other

than you hiring them to judge) versus dirty (coaches or others close to your team).

  • This will give us more options for scheduling judges. Each school may bring a MAXIMUM of 5 dirty judges; schools with more than 25 entries will be required to fulfill their judging quota by bringing clean judges or hiring clean judges from us. If you have extra clean judges, you may contact us and we may hire them. *Depending on tournament size we might allow more than 5.

Please keep your Speechwire roster for our tournament up to date during the week before the tournament. We look forward to seeing you on Saturday, February 23rd, 2019!
