Dear Colleagues,

 

The Northwest Speech Team would like to invite you to the 2018 Viking Voice Speech Invitational on February 16th, 2019 held at Northwest High School.  We hope to offer a competitive tournament as teams prepare for both NSDA Districts and Conference meets;  Last year, we fielded teams from Class A to Class D with many going on to garner awards on the individual and team level at State.  We also had one out-of-state school, Maize High School. who made it up.  In addition, Northwest is once again a qualifying tournament for NIETOC held this year at Millard North High School, Denver, CO May 10th-12th.  The NIETOC Qualifying events are Humorous Interpretation, Dramatic/Serious Interpretation, Program of Oral Interpretation, Duet Acting, Informative and Persuasive(Oratory) and other supplemental events.  Check out http://nietoc.com/faq/ for more information.

 

EVENTS  Our tournament is an open competition (no novice), offering all nine NSAA Events; in addition, with NSDA Districts coming up and it as a NIETOC qualifying event, we will also offer POI(Program of Oral Interpretation).  From the National Speech and Debate Website:

 

Using selections from Prose, Poetry and Drama students create a ten-minute performance around a central theme. Program Oral Interpretation is designed to test a student’s ability to intersplice multiple types of literature into a single, cohesive performance. A manuscript is required and may be used as a prop within the performance if the performer maintains control of the manuscript at all times. Performances can also include an introduction written by the student to contextualize the performance and state the title and the author of each selection.

TOURNAMENT FORMAT

 

We will have two rounds of preliminary competition with one judge in one round, two judges in one round, and 3 judges in champ finals and one in honors and merit finals.  In order to ensure students received three preliminary ballots, it’s imperative that we have enough judges.  We hire an incredibly talented pool of hired judges, but we need schools to provide judges as well.  We will offer Champs and Honors Finals for events with entries of 24 or more and add on Merit Finals for events that have 70 or more entries.  Six entries will advance to each final section except for OID which will have four.  We will not be using speaker points at all but rank only using strength of schedule, head to head, and reciprocals to break ties.  We used this last year, and it went well.

 

TRIATHLON/ENTRIES

This year, we will be offering Triathlon competition for those entering in three events. The top three overall speakers will receive awards  Students will receive points for an event if they break to the final round.  The only exception to students being allowed in three events would be students in both extemp and OID.  The logistics for students being in a third event with those two others is a logisitical nightmare for both the student and tournament we’ve discovered. Competitors in OID and Extemp are NOT allowed to triple enter.  Therefore, it doesn’t not qualify for the Triathlon.

TEAM AWARDS

We will award plaques to the top two teams in Sweepstakes.  New this year will be the TEAM QUALITY AWARD where a team’s total Sweepstakes Points will be divided by their total number of entries.  Teams must have a minimum number of ten entries to qualify for the quality awards.

 

Congrats to York and Lakeview for being Champs and Runners Up in Open Sweeps and Skutt for winning the team quality award.

 

EXTEMP FINALS- Cross Examination

In the spirit of the mission of the Greater Nebraska Forensics Association, we are going to continue with Cross Examination in our Champs extemp finals.  Last year, we implemented it, and both judges and students thought the experience educational and useful.   Instead of 60 minutes, those in Champs Extemp finals will get 30 minutes to prepare.  After each person’s speech, the speaker will have a two-minute maximum cross-examine period where the previous speaker will ask them questions pertaining to their speech.  The goal of this is for students to become critical listeners and questioners of others as well as being able to defend and explain the argument in an impromptu fashion.  The judges will be asked to take this into consideration while judging.  The only exception to the previous speaker sticking around to ask questions will be the sixth speaker who will cross-examine the first speaker before going and drawing the questions themselves.

ENTRY DUE DATE

Please have entries and judges submitted on SpeechWire by 7:00 PM on Monday, February 11th.  Changes can be made until Thursday, February 15th at 4:00 PM

 

FOOD

Northwest Speech parents will be running concessions in the cafeteria all during the day.  Our Family and Consumer Science classes will be preparing a wonderful meal for both coaches and judges.  Please keep drinks and food out of the auditorium.

 

FEES

Entry Fees are $8 per event.  Each school is responsible for providing one qualified judge for every six entries.  Please make every effort to bring not only judges to cover your entry but also qualified ones who will write educational and constructive ballots to help speakers.  For every entry not covered by a judge will incur a $15 judging fee. Entry fees will be locked at 5 PM on Wednesday, February 13th.
