You are invited to the Bloomington Big Questions 2019 Speech & Debate Tournament, co-sponsored by Jackson Creek Middle School & Indiana University School of Public and Environmental Affairs (SPEA) and Department of Religious Studies!

The tournament will be hosted on February 9, 2019 (snow date = Feb. 16) on the campus of Indiana University-Bloomington (headquartered in SPEA, 1315 E 10th St, Bloomington, IN 47405). Driving/parking/map/accessibility information will be posted on SpeechWire asap.

Events
We will offer twelve events: Debate (Big Questions format [i.e. 42-minute rounds, NOT Middle School format 23-minute rounds—see https://www.speechanddebate.org/wp-content/uploads/Big-Questions-Format-Manual.pdf] and resolution: Humans are primarily driven by self-interest.), Declamation, Extemp, Drama, Duo (memorized), Duo (scripted), Humor, Impromptu, Oratory, Poetry, Prose, Radio. We will not offer Discussion. Doubling is allowed, with the exception that Debate, Radio, and Extemp are mutually exclusive; students in these events may double (just not in the conflicting events), but they must (in each of the three parallel rounds) speak first in Debate/Radio/Extemp, before speaking in their second event.

Awards
One of our goals is to encourage students to try debate! Thus, we will award double ribbons to five places in each event except debate, for which we will award double ribbons to ten places; additionally, the top three individual debaters will be awarded plaques (i.e. if debaters compete in pairs, it is possible that one but not the other partner will receive a plaque). We will award six sweepstakes trophies—three each in large and small school divisions; Jackson Creek will abstain from the sweepstakes competition. As a condition for award eligibility, all debaters and debate judges are required to submit a brief Big Questions survey before the awards ceremony.

Judges
Each school is responsible for bringing one judge for every five speech entries and one judge for every four debate entries (If we are short on judges, schools not meeting judge quotas may be ineligible for sweepstakes).

Observers
Speech/debate rounds/awards are not public events. Observers will not ordinarily be allowed.

Registration
Please register on SpeechWire as soon as possible to facilitate our space planning! Our priority deadline is Mon. Feb. 4, but it would be really helpful if you could give us your best estimates on numbers (of entries and judges) as soon as you receive this invitation! We will accommodate late adds on a space available basis (so please do not inflate entry numbers in order to reserve space for late adds). Please notify us of drops asap—text/call 812-269-2710 and/or email browncg@indiana.edu the moment you know or suspect that a student or judge might drop!! (I don’t care if it’s in the middle of the night—I’ll probably be up working on final details anyway!) We want to have personalized schematics ready for students/judges upon arrival, but it’s nearly impossible to make these timely and accurate unless everyone communicates late drops and/or requests for late adds as soon as this information is available!!!!

Concessions
Food will be available for purchase throughout the tournament. Concession sales help us to pay for ribbons/trophies/plaques, SpeechWire, etc., so please encourage your students to buy their lunch/snacks from us! Complimentary food and beverages will be provided for judges/coaches.

We look forward to seeing you in Bloomington!

Best,
Candy Brown, Professor of Religious Studies, Indiana University (812-269-2710, browncg@indiana.edu)
Linda Scott, Language Arts Teacher, Jackson Creek Middle School
