Dear Coaches,

On behalf of the administration and the Speech Team coaching staff at Marist High School, I am pleased to invite you to the CCFL Varsity Individual Events Qualifier #3, to be held on Saturday, January 19, 2019. This will be the final tournament in the qualifying process for the 2019 Grand National Tournament in Milwaukee, WI. Please see the details below regarding registration, fees, judges, food, and scheduling.

Registration:  We will once again be using SpeechWire to schedule and tab this tournament. You will receive an invitation generated by SpeechWire with instructions on how to register. There is a three entry limit in each of the six NCFL categories: Extemp Speaking, Original Oratory, Declamation, Oral Interp, Dramatic Performance and Duo Interp. Double entries are now allowed in all events, so make sure you use the same first and last name for all entries in SpeechWire.

Registration Deadlines:  Your entry should be made online at www.speechwire.com no later than 4 pm on Friday, January 11. This is crucial so that we can find judges and schedule rounds. Please contact Sam Paoletti if you have any questions about this.

Registration Confirmation:  There is no reason to confirm your entries.  However, you should make drops to your entries on SpeechWire at any time up until Friday night.  You also must call or text as your team is leaving your school on Saturday. Call even if there are no final changes and leave a message.  Remember, no judges may be dropped at any time, including the morning of the contest. Tournament check in will be from 7:30am until 8:00am in the main entrance of Marist High School, followed by a judges and coaches meeting that will begin promptly at 8:00am on the day of the tournament. Extemp prep will start at 8:15am.

Fees and Judges:  The base fee for entering this contest will be a charge of $50 for the first five entries (even if it's just 1); additional entries are $10 each, with a cap at $150.  The fee allows for up to three entries in each of the six NCFL categories.  The judge quota for this contest is the standard one judge for each six entries or fraction thereof.  Fees are due the day of the contest and checks can be made payable to Marist High School. You will be charged for your original number of entries; even if you drop a student, you are responsible for the fees for that student.

Awards:  Trophies and medals will be awarded to the top six speakers or duos in each category.  Team trophies will be given to the top three teams.

Special Requirements:  There is a ten-minute maximum time (with a 30 second grace period) in all events except Extemp, which has a seven-minute maximum (and 30 second grace period). Entries in Declamation must be either Freshmen or Sophomores. Declamation selections must have been given originally as a speech by someone other than the speaker. Oral Interp includes one prose and one poetry program, to be delivered in alternate rounds.

Qualifying Process:  Please note the process used to qualify for Nationals. There will be three qualifying tournaments held. Students must compete in at least two contests to be considered for the NCFL Grand Tourney. At the final qualifier, student scores from the best two of the three contests will be counted. The six students/entries with the best overall ranks will be designated as qualified for the NCFL tournament. Ties in ranks will be broken using speaker points from the two tallied contests; further ties will be broken by dropping the highest and lowest points from those tied. National qualifiers will be announced at the end of the awards ceremony.

Rules and Regulations:  All rules that govern CCFL IE Tournaments are included in the CCFL By-Laws and will be followed at this tournament.  Also, smoking is not permitted anywhere in our building or on our school grounds.

Food Services:  We will be selling food on the premises.  There will be a pizza order form to follow for students.  Judges and coaches will also be served breakfast and lunch in the judges and coaches lounge.
