Happy September!

Our first MAST of the year is upon us, Thursday, September 20, 2018 at Glades Middle School (thanks to our new hosts, Christine McMahon and the Glades Middle Students/Parents)!

Please follow the instructions on this page to register your entries. Remember, each school may only initially enter FIVE students in all events except Congress, in which you can enter TEN. Entries beyond those numbers will go on a waitlist. If space at Glades Middle School permits, students will be released off of the waitlist after registration closes on a first-come, first-served basis.

Registration for NEW ENTRIES will close on Tuesday, September 18 at 5pm. You will be permitted to make changes (drops or name changes) until 12pm on Thursday, September 20. Any changes after that, please text Megan West: 940.206.3806 or Justin Weaver: 954.790.8160 the school name, student who is dropping, and her/his event. Any HIDDEN DROPS (drops that go unreported by the start of the tournament) will cost the school $20 per drop, to be invoiced and paid before the next MAST.

The address for Glades Middle School is 16700 SW 48 Ct. Miramar, FL 33027. All competitors MUST arrive between 3:00pm and 3:30pm.  Buses will pull into the bus loop on the west side of the school. Cars must park in the pickup loop at the front of the school, either in a spot or along the grass, but CANNOT block the pickup loop.

Safety & Security:
  • All competitors, judges, and coaches MUST visibly wear and display the identifying lanyards and/or badges provided. Check your email for distribution information. Anyone not wearing their lanyard and/or badge will be asked to leave the campus. For the September tournament ONLY, coaches MUST pick-up these lanyards from the Media Center upon arrival and distribute them to students. For future tournaments, students will be expected to be wearing their lanyards upon arrival. All judges (that are not students) will pick-up their lanyards at judge check-in at the Media Center. Student judges should be given lanyards from their coach.
  • No competitor may enter a room until the judge arrives, and if they're waiting for a judge longer than 15 minutes they should send a representative to the media center to let the tab room know.
  • No competitors may wander around the school. They must either be in rounds or in the cafeteria.
  • Current BCPS Security Policy reiterates the importance of consistent supervision of students by their coach/chaperone. ALL coaches MUST wait until all of their students have left campus via approved transportation before they can leave Glades. Failure to adhere to this rule will preclude a team from future MAST participation.

For PF, the SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER topic will be used - Resolved: The United States should accede to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea without reservations.

For LD, the NOVICE (civil disobedience) topic will be used - Resolved: Civil disobedience in a democracy is morally justified.

For Policy Debate, the 2018-19 topic will be used - Resolved: The United States federal government should substantially reduce its restrictions on legal immigration to the United States. In addition, at the MASTs all teams MUST use the Novice Policy Packet. Instructions for accessing the packet were emailed directly to all coaches.

Extemp topic areas will be "the US Supreme Court" and "International Trade", and Impromptu topic areas will be "Fall" and "Famous Poets".

Congress legislation for the fall semester was provided at the Fall Coaches' Meeting. It is also accessible electronically here under the "Files for Download" section. The fall legislation packet has designations for which bills will be debated in which months, with 4 bills per month. Per usual, chambers might not debate all 4 bills if time does not allow.

More information may be sent out as the tournament approaches. Please let your mentor know if you have any questions about the process. We know this may be the first tournament for some of you!

*REMINDER FOR PRIVATE AND CHARTER SCHOOLS: Please remember to email Megan with how many tournaments you will be attending this year so that an invoice can be generated for you. These MUST be paid before or at the first MAST for schools to be able to participate.
