Dear colleagues,

On behalf of McKendree University and the McKendree Speech and Debate Affinity Group, we cordially invite you and your team to attend the 4th Annual City of Cedars Swing on November 9-11.

We will offer a Lincoln-Douglas debate tournament with open and junior divisions as well as two individual events tournaments over the weekend with the full slate of AFA events. The LD tournament will take place on Friday afternoon and Saturday. The City of Cedars IE tournament will take place on Saturday, while the Forensics Roots IE tournament will occur on Sunday. Both IE halves will offer awards for the top six in each event (as well as very nice ‘swing’ championships for the top competitor in each event for the swing), individual sweepstakes awards for the top three competitors, and team sweepstakes awards for the top three schools.

LD Entries are due Monday, November 5, by 5:00 p.m. and IE entries are due by Tuesday, November 6, by 5:00 p.m.  Changes may be made without charge until Wednesday, November 7, at 5:00 p.m.  Registration for both tournaments should be submitted via Speechwire.

McKendree University is located in Lebanon, IL, about 30 miles east of St. Louis.  The Metro-East area is home to many quality restaurants, hotels, and a variety of forms of entertainment.  We hope you will join us in November.

Sincerely,

Team Sweepstakes: Schools will earn sweepstakes points for a top three ranking in preliminary rounds (3 points-2 points-1 point for a 1, 2, or 3 rank respectively).  Placement in final rounds will earn 6 points-5 points-4 points-3 points-2 points-1 point for places 1 through 6 or 7 respectively.

Quadrathon: Competitors entered in at least four events across two genres are eligible for individual sweepstakes.

Swing Championships: Swing championships will be awarded to the competitor in each event who competed in both halves and has the lowest cumulative finals ranks.

Local Host Entries: McKendree students may be entered in LD and individual events. They will receive ranks and be eligible for final rounds like everybody else, but will be ineligible for individual sweepstakes. McKendree will also not be eligible for team sweepstakes.

Extemp prep will permit internet access as per NFA rules. McKendree will provide wireless internet access as long as it is available and functional. Access to electric outlets will be limited in the extemp prep room.

LD Notes

LD will utilize NFA-LD rules and utilize the 2018-19 NFA-LD resolution. We will offer an open and junior division using NFA eligibility guidelines. We strongly encourage LD debaters to disclose their cases on the appropriate LD case list.

Rounds 1 & 2 will be preset; rounds 3 & 4 will be power-matched. Brackets will be broken elims.

Fees and Judging Obligations

Fees will be calculated according to the following schedule:

IE entries                                                             $8 per slot

LD entries                                                            $30 per entry

Uncovered IEs                                                   $10 in addition to the entry fee

Uncovered LD                                                   $75 in addition to the entry fee

One LD judge will cover 2 LD entries. One IE judge will cover 8 IE entries across all patterns.

A nuisance fee of $6.00 per slot will be added to the original entry fee for every drop after 5:00pm on Wednesday, November 7th. Drops at registration will incur a $10.00 nuisance fee per slot in addition to the original entry fee.

Judges dropped after the Wednesday, 5:00 p.m. deadline will result in a nuisance fee of $25.00 each plus uncovered fees. ALL fees are assessed as of 5:00 p.m., Wednesday November, 7.

Every team is encouraged to bring at least one experienced judge. We will have several community judges available, but judges are a little scarce in Lebanon so please make every effort to cover your entries. We’d rather have your judges than your $$$.  For those paying with a check, please make it payable to “McKendree University.”

We ask that if your students have any conflicts with judges for non-competitive reasons that you let us know so we can block the judge from judging the student. This is an easy thing for us to do with Speechwire. Examples of when this could happen might include: the student is a family member/close friend of the judge, a student was harassed/assaulted by a judge, a student was a teammate of the judge, a student was coached by the judge. We absolutely respect the privacy of these decisions. We hope that if a judge has participated in improper behavior that the tournament director will be notified so that, if necessary, the judge can be removed from the judging pool before interacting with students. The tournament director will not ask for details and will trust in the decision of the student.

DACA Information

McKendree University is committed to inclusiveness and welcome students and coaches from all identities and social roles. In light of ongoing harassment and discrimination, and the current administration's most recent action to repeal DACA, our programs stand in solidarity with, and will continue to offer a safe, educational space for, our most vulnerable members. Lebanon is not a sanctuary city. However, the Migra Map does not currently show any ICE activity in the St. Louis Metro area, and the State of Illinois recently signed into law the TRUST Act which enacted the nation’s strongest state-level due process protections for immigrants who fear any interaction with local police could result in deportation. We have found http://www.icirr.org/ to be a useful resource

Anti-Harassment Policy

McKendree University is committed to being an inclusive community that values the worth of each individual while respecting and accepting differences. Harassment is generally defined as verbal, written, or physical conduct based on or motivated by an individual’s protected status that unreasonably interferes with an individual’s work or academic performance or creates a hostile work or educational environment by interfering with or limiting a person’s ability to participate in McKendree’s educational programs and activities. Harassing conduct may take many forms, including verbal acts and name-calling, as well as nonverbal behavior, such as graphic and written statements, or conduct that is physically threatening, harmful, or humiliating. Should we become aware of any harassment occurring during the tournament, we will report it immediately to McKendree’s Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs (who serves as the Title IX Coordinator), Dr. Shruti Desai. You may also contact Dr. Desai yourself:

Please report behavior that is not in line with our stated anti-harassment policy. If, at any point in time, behavior is reported that is antithetical to a positive learning environment for any tournament participants, we will deal with it accordingly. It will be reported to appropriate official on our campus, properly documented to national forensic organizations, and the offenders will be asked to leave campus. Directors, please remember, you are responsible for the people that you bring to our campus.

Lodging

While we do not have an official tournament hotel, there are a number of hotels in the area that offer excellent rates.  Booking early is suggested. Below are a few possibilities:

Parking

Parking will be available in the Fitness Center Parking lot each day of the tournament (the largest parking lot on campus).  It is just across the street from the Piper Academic Center, which will be the tournament headquarters.  Directions to McKendree and a campus map can be accessed at: http://www.mckendree.edu/about/visitor/campus-map.php.
