Dear Debate Coaches, Competitors, and Judges,
 
Welcome to the 1st annual Hurricane Season Opener! We are excited to host you on September 15th. Our team and parents are hard at work to provide you with an outstanding experience. 
 
Events: We are pleased to offer outstanding competition in Policy Debate, Lincoln Douglas Debate, Public Forum Debate, Congress, Original Oratory, Extemporaneous Speaking, Dramatic Interpretation, Humorous Interpretation, Duo Interpretation, Program Oral Interpretation, Impromptu and Informative Speaking.  We will offer Varsity, Novice, and Middle School Divisions in each event!
 
 
Rounds: There will be 5 rounds of competition across Speech and Debate. Congress will have 2 preliminary sessions and a Final Session.
 
Judges: In order to run a smooth and efficient tournament, we will need you to provide 1 judge for every 5 IE entries (including Congress) and 1 judge for every 2 debate entries (per event) or any fraction thereof.
 
Entry fee: Entry fees will be $20.00 per competitor (so $40.00 per entry in Policy, PF, and Duo).Your speech competitors can double enter for no additional charge!
 
Deadlines: Entries will be accepted through Tuesday, September 11th at 5:00pm.  After the entry deadline. After the deadline has passed, any drops will forfeit their entry fee. On Friday any drops will be assessed the entry fee plus a $10.00 penalty. Drops the day of or during the tournament will forfeit the entry fee plus a $25.00 penalty.
 
Meals: All meal prices for competitors are included in the entry fee. Judge meal fees are $7.00 per judge. Competitors will have the choice of tuna, turkey, Italian, or veggie subs.
 
Registration: Registration will begin promptly at 7:00am on Saturday, September 15th in the Northeast High School Media Center. Registration will close at 7:45am.
 
Debate Topics:
 
2018-19 Policy Debate Topic: Resolved: The United States federal government should substantially reduce its restrictions on legal immigration to the United States.
 
 
September/October Lincoln Douglas Debate Topic: Resolved: In the United States, reporters ought to have the right to protect the identity of confidential sources.
 
                   Lincoln Douglas Novice/MS Topic: Resolved: Civil disobedience in a democracy is morally justified.
                     
September/October Public Forum Debate Topic: Resolved: Resolved: The United States should accede to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea without reservations.
 
 
Congress: All Congress Legislation should be emailed to stephen.p.jones@browardschools.com by Tuesday, September 4th.
