Cotter High School LogoWelcome to the registration site of the 2019 Cotter Speech Tournament (March 23, 2019)

Cotter High School (Winona, MN) is excited to host a speech meet on Saturday, March 23, 2019!  Our tournament will feature all 13 MSHSL categories, and there is no limit to total team entries or categories.  Check-in on the day of the tournament is at the John Nett Center, 360 Vila St., Winona.  Note we will not be offering POI this year as we only had a few signed up.  We will review for next year.

Tournament Format:
There will be three preliminary rounds of competition followed by a Final consisting of students who ranked 1-6 in prelims.

Additionally, one preliminary round and all final rounds will feature a timer with timing cards. The timing process will be executed in similar fashion as sub-sections/sections and state.  This is to give each competitor at least one attempt with time cards PRIOR to sub/sections, section competition.  There will not be a disqualification upon exceeding time, however, it will be noted in preliminary rounds and if the student speaks beyond the rules that govern their category in final rounds, then their overall rank in that round will be decreased by one rank.  Please consult the MSHSL rules that govern each specific category.

MSHSL Categories:
Extemp. Reading (Prose): All Stories
Extemp. Reading (Poetry): All Poems
Storytelling: All Stories
Discussion: MSHSL Sub-Section Topics

Discussion Tasks:
We will be distributing Discussion tasks in-round.

Tiebreakers:
1 - Total ranks in Prelim or Final rounds
2 - Head-to-Head in prelims (MSHSL State Final style)
3 - Prelim Opponents Average Ranks (OAR)
4 - Reciprocals in this round

Entry Fees:
$6.00 per entry (Duos count as one entry), first 20 entries are no charge.  Checks can be made payable to "Cotter Schools", with "Speech Meet" in the memo line.
***Special Note:  You will be responsible for the full fee if you drop (as a team) past the deadline. This includes the first 20 entries.

Registration Deadline:
Tuesday, March 19, 2019 at 10:00pm.

No-charge drops will be accepted up to Tuesday, March 19, 2019 at 10:00pm.  After that, all entries are frozen and thus drops will be assessed a fee of $6.00, regardless of the "first 20 free" entries.

To help better plan the rooms, please have all preliminary entries in Speechwire by Friday, March 1, 2019 at 10pm.

Judging Requirements:
Teams are required to bring one judge for every six entries. Additional judges will be available to hire for $90.00 if teams cannot meet this requirement. Please contact Amy French as soon as possible if you anticipate you will need to hire a judge.

Scheduling:
We will be site scheduling this tournament, so please make all necessary changes to your registration on Speechwire until registration closes on Saturday morning. You may text any of your drops to Amy French (507) 450-2690.

Concessions:
Food will be available for purchase throughout the day for students at the Cotter Concession Stand.  There will be breakfast (including Bloedow's donuts) lunch served in the Judges Lounge for Coaches, Judges, and Bus/Van drivers.

General:
As we did last year, we will have a "Family Feud" game between Final Round and Awards. Each team's representatives will receive a prize, with the winners receiving a Bloedow's party donut.

Awards:
There will be team sweepstakes trophies awarded to the winner and runner up in large and small school categories.  Individual awards will also be given for the Finalists in each category.

New for 2019: we will award an overall "Grand Champion", regardless of school size.  This will be calculated by the Top 20 speakers from each school based on Final Round results.  This is being tried to balance the Quality of the speaker vs. the Quantity of the speakers brought to a tournament.  Please provide feedback after the tournament as this is a work in progress.

The winner of the Large School, the winner of the Small School, and Grand Champion team sweepstakes award will each receive a Bloedow's party donut to eat on the way home.

Please contact Amy French if you have any questions. We look forward to a great tournament!
