You are invited to the first annual Bloomington Big Questions speech & debate tournament, co-hosted by Jackson Creek Middle School and the Indiana University Department of Religious Studies. The tournament will be held on Saturday March 3, on the campus of Indiana University-Bloomington (Ballantine Hall, 1020 E Kirkwood Ave, Bloomington, IN 47405).

All students in sixth, seventh, and eighth grades are eligible. We will be offering the following twelve events: Big Questions Debate, Declamation, Dramatic Interpretation, Duo Interpretation (memorized), Duo Interpretation (scripted), Extemporaneous, Humorous Interpretation, Impromptu, Oratory, Poetry, Prose, and Radio Broadcasting. We do not plan to offer Discussion (given its similarity to debate). Students may double in debate and any one speech event; radio/extemp doublers will begin prep half an hour before other contestants. Students may not double in two speech events.

Entries in Big Questions Debate may consist of one or two students. Students should be prepared to debate BOTH sides (which will be randomly assigned round by round) of the following resolution: Humans are fundamentally different from other animals.

We will award double ribbons to five places in each speech event and to ten places in debate; the top two debate teams (or top four debaters) will also receive champion plaques; we will also have two runner-up plaques. We will give sweepstakes trophies to the top three schools, plus a trophy for the top small school; Jackson Creek will not be eligible for sweepstakes.

Food and beverages will be available for purchase (complimentary for judges and coaches).

We ask that schools try to bring one judge for every four entries, but no fewer than one judge for every five entries. If you are able to bring additional judges, please do! (Our actual need is one judge for every two debate entries, so if you have numerous debate entries please help us cover needs!). High-school students with 150 NSDA points may judge speech events. ANY high-school student  may judge Big Questions Debate!!!

Please arrive no later than 8:00 a.m. Parking permits are not required on weekends (except for special needs or 24-hour reserved spaces). There should be plenty of parking near Ballantine for private cars (we’ll send out maps of the campus, parking, and of Ballantine Hall). Buses will have to drop students off at Ballantine, then park at the stadium.
