Dear Coach and Speakers,
 
Welcome to the BEN DAVIS GIANT SPEAKERS Invitational Speech Tournament on February 3rd, 2018.  The meet will be held at Ben Davis High School located at 1200 N Girls School Road, Indianapolis, IN 46214. 
 
DIRECTIONS AND PARKING
Please park in the front of the building.  Buses please use the bus lot.
 
REGISTRATION DEADLINE
All Registration will be done on www.speechwire.com. No emails, faxes or paper entries will be accepted. We strongly encourage that entries be made as early as possible (like right now, so you don’t forget) Registration will be locked (meaning no adding of entries can be added) on Wednesday, January 31st, 2018 at 5:00 PM.  Coaches will be able to make names changes and such until Wednesday, January 31st, 2018.  
 
TOURNAMENT STRUCTURE
This will be a varsity only tournament with three rounds of competition and a final round.  However, if an event is extremely large we will go to a semi-final round.  We will notify you of the structure on the day of the tournament.
Entry Per Team: UNLIMITED
Event Limitation: None. 
Non- Sweeps Team Allowed: NO
Pickup Drops Allowed: NO
Additional Teams Allowed: NO
 
*An event may be capped.  So enter quickly.
 
TOURNAMENT RULES:
We will follow the rules established for IHFSA with the following exceptions:
o Discussion is limited to 30 minutes only. Students in discussion may not double in Extemp.
o DUO - Both duo partners may double using the same duo partner or a different one in a scripted, memorize and op duos.  Duos cannot compete using the same piece in more than one duo.  So in other words, you can have one duo entered in the tournament twice.  However, for teams that are the same for Scripted and Mem, you must identify which entry is scripted (SCPT) or mem (MEM).  Please see example below.

John Doe (MEM) and Susie Doe (MEM)
CAUTION: Students may compete against themselves in a round.  The office will not adjust the schedule for this occurrence.  Students performing the wrong piece under the wrong number will be disqualified if caught.  So, this is a risk you take.
o Students may enter up to 4 events at their own risk – no more than two events per flight
CAUTION:  After the first round is completed, any student missing a round will be ranked last by the office. We will not re-run any round due to student error.
o Extempers may double in any FLIGHT B or C event at their own risk.  Extempers may not double in discussion.

FLIGHT A –DISCUSSION/EXTEMP PREP
FLIGHT B – DRAMA, EXTEMP (US/IX), ORIGINAL ORATORY, ORIGINAL PERFORMANCE, PROSE
FLIGHT C – DUO, HUMOR, IMPROMPTU, INFORMATIVE, POETRY, PROGRAMED ORAL INTERP (POI), RADIO
 
DISCUSSION  
We will be using the Socratic Seminar format.  Artifacts will be posted on the Speechwire for download on January 29th, 2018. No electronic devices will be allowed to be used or seen in the round.  Students who bring electronic devices to the round will be instructed to place those devices on a table away from the competition until the round is over.  ALL ROUNDS WILL BE 30 MINUTES LONG.
 
EXTEMP
Extemp will draw each round. The topic areas are as follow:
 
ROUND ONE: Europe & Asia
ROUND TWO: US ECONOMY
ROUND THREE: Foreign Economy
FINAL ROUND:  Domestic Social Issues
 
RADIO
We will follow the new radio format.  The radio prompts will be available on January 29th, 2018 after 5:00 pm.  Radio students can quadruple.  If a radio student doubles in Flight B, the student must go to radio 1st. Radio students may not use any prepared outlines. 
 
BALLOT RETURN 
All judges should return their signed and properly scored ballots and completed critique sheets at the end of each round to the ballot table located outside of the library.  Judges are expected to stay for the entire meet.
 
 
 
 
CONCESSIONS
There should be no leaving the building as food for students will be served in the cafeteria. Complimentary food for judges, coaches and bus drivers will be provided.
 
JUDGE REQUIREMENTS
Each school MUST bring one judge for every 5 contestants and every fraction thereof. Teams that do not bring enough judges may not be eligible for IE sweepstakes placement. 
 
AWARDS
Our tournament is dedicated toward the individual achievement so team sweepstakes trophies will not be given.  We will acknowledge the Top 5 schools i.e. a shout-out from the podium. 
 
So, who gets trophies?  The kids.  We will be awarding medals to the top 5 individual contestants with the most number of points (An incentive to double or even quadruple).  Tournament Event Champions will receive a ribbon and medal.  The TOP 12 students (Next-In and Finals) will receive ribbons.
