2017 Southport Speech & Debate Smackdown!

November 11th, 2017

 

Southport High School would like to invite you to the Southport Speech & Debate Smackdown.  The deadline for preregistration is Wednesday, November 8th at 11:00pm.

 

FORMAT:     

  • 4 straight rounds

  • Sweepstakes points & ribbons for top 5 in each division

  • Novice entries must be first-year competitors

                   

TIMING:        

  • 7:00-7:45     Check-in

  • 7:45            Judges’ Meeting

  • 8:00 Extemp Draw Begins

  • 8:15            First round begins

  • Rounds begin at 8:15, 9:45, 11:15 and 12:45.   

 

EVENTS:      

  • Speech - Drama, Humor, Duo, Poetry, Prose, Original Performance, Original Oratory, U.S. Extemp, Int’l Extemp, Impromptu, Broadcasting, Discussion, Informative and Programmed Oral Interp.

  • Debate - LD, PF, Congress and World School

 

RULES:        

  • World Debate:

    • Rd. 1 - Impromptu

    • Rd. 2 - Prepared: This House would establish a living wage.

    • Rd. 3 - Prepared: This House believes the United States should offer free college tuition to all American

      public colleges and universities.
    • Rd. 4 - Impromptu

  • Radio:

    • Round 1:  News program (music topics and commercial topic supplied on Monday, student writes a newscast much like they do now) 5 min overall performance

    • Round 2:  Pre-written editorial (topic provided on Monday) speak for 2 mins

    • Round 3:  OTS (current practice)

    • Round 4:  News program again

  • Extemp:  Draws will occur before Rounds 1 & 3 only.

  • Congress:  Bills 3, 5, 9, 14

  • Discussion: Artifacts will be released Mon. Nov. 6th

  • IHSFA Rules will govern all other events.

    • We WILL use the new 7 min prep and speak format in Impromptu

 

ENTRIES:     

  • 40 entries maximum per school

  • 5 entries maximum per event

  • No Pickups

 

 

DOUBLING:  

  • Competitors MAY NOT double in Discussion, Congress or debate events.  

  • Students MAY double in Broadcasting.  

  • Contestants MAY do two duos IF with the same partner

  • Students who are doubled in Impromptu should go to their Impromptu round LAST.  

  • No tripling (and quadrupling is right out)

 

JUDGES:   

  • 1 judge for every 5 entries or fraction thereof.  (5 entries=1 judge, 6 entries=2 judges)

 

AWARDS:     

  • Team trophies for top 5 teams.

  • Sweepstakes points:

    • Varsity: 1st=6pts, 2nd=5pts, 3rd=4pts, 4th=3pts, 5th=2pts.

    • Novice: 1st=5pts, 2nd=4pts, 3rd=3pts, 4th=2pts, 5th=1pt.

    • Host school not eligible for team trophy

 

FOOD:          

  • Concessions will be available in the cafeteria throughout the day.  Pizza, baked goods, soda, and many other items will be available. Please purchase concessions, it is the only way we can fund our program.

 

 

 

PARKING AND ENTRANCE:                                      

  • Please park on the west side of the school.  Your team may enter the building using Doors 16, 17, & 18, adjacent to the West Parking Lot.
