Greetings,

Your team is cordially invited to the Star Tribune Lightning Speech Classic presented by the Eastview High School Speech Team. Our tournament will take place on Saturday, February 17, 2018, at Eastview High School and Valley Middle School of STEM in Apple Valley, MN.  All 13 MSHSL categories will be open to registration and we will allow NFL rules where applicable. We will also have POI (program oral interpretation) and we are a NIETOC bid tournament.  Like we have done for the past three years at our tournament, we will offer two divisions of competition: Open and Championship. Open division is for your less-experienced speakers (this is 9th-10th graders or first year in speech, not a new category) and Championship is geared towards your more experienced speakers (Juniors and Seniors).  This way, everyone will compete with competition at their level.  Students may not compete in different divisions.  Double Entries are welcome (even in discussion).  However, students are not allowed to double enter into two draw categories.   Each division will have a final round.  We also will have honorable mentions at the awards ceremonyfor those that just miss the final round.

To avoid less-than-desirable speaking rooms, we are going to be utilizing two buildings.  Valley Middle School of STEM in Apple Valley will house our Open division and Eastview High School will hold our Championship division.  However, ALL DRAW EVENTS - BOTH OPEN AND CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISIONS - WILL TAKE PLACE AT EASTVIEW HIGH SCHOOL.

As always we will have a great judges' and coaches' lounge.  Concessions will be available to students, coaches and judges throughout the day.

Here us some other important information:

Divisions:

As we have done in the past, we will have an Open Division (for the less-experiences speakers; usually 1st or 2nd year) and Championship Division (more experienced speakers).  We will have a final round in each division.  Honorable mentions will be mentioned (and ribbon given) for those who just miss the final round.

Cost:

Each entry will be $7.00.  Please have all of your drops/adds in by Thursday, February 15th to avoid a fee.

Judges:

Please provide one judge for every six entries.  Uncovered judges will cost $75.00

Shuttle Buses We will provide shuttle buses from Valley Middle back to EVHS at the end of the day.  You will need to drop your kids off at the correct building in the morning.

If you have any other questions please feel free to email me at ryan.roseen@district196.org

Thank you very much for attending our tournament.

Eastview Speech Team Head Coach

UPDATE: EMAIL SENT TO REGISTERED COACHES ON THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 8:

Dear Coach:

Thank you for registering for the 2018 Star Tribune Eastview Lightning Classic to be held at Eastview High School and Valley Middle School on Saturday, February 17th, 2018.  Some information for you as we approach the day.

Drops/Adds

1) Speechwire will be close to adds on Tuesday at 5:00 p.m.  If you have additional adds to the tournament you need to make, please contact me at zachary.prax@district196.org as soon as possible when you know of them.  I cannot guarantee inclusion to the tournament after this deadline, but will do my best.
2) Coaches will be able to make drops in Speechwire through Saturday morning at 7:45 a.m.  Anything after that will need to be brought to me in person or given to me through email or text.  You can text me at 952-201-0201.  Please note that fees will be locked on Thursday, February 15th at 5:00 p.m.; try to get your drops in by that time.
3) Note that students may not cross divisions (i.e., they cannot enter the Open division in one event and the Championship division in another event).  In addition, students may not double enter in two draw events, nor may they double enter in Discussion and a draw event.

Registration:

1) Each building will have its own registration table upon arrival.  The registration at Eastview will be on the 2nd Floor outside of room C240 (the tab room) and registration at Valley Middle will take place in the main entryway.
2) There will be a judge meeting in the judge’s lounge at both buildings at 8:30 a.m.  Please make sure your judges know they should check in with your school and not the tournament, and let them know to attend the meeting.

Buses/Shuttles:

THERE ARE NO SHUTTLE BUSES IN THE MORNING! All students need to show up at the appropriate building. Remember ALL Championship events, as well as all open divisions of draw events (Extemp. Speaking, Extemp. Reading, and Storytelling) will be at Eastview, and all open events (with the exception of draws) will be at Valley Middle.

Shuttle bus service will begin at 2:45 p.m.  Please instruct your students and judges to board the buses as soon as they are finished with their final rounds so that we can start the joint awards ceremony promptly at 4:15 p.m.

Awards:

We will have both finals and honor finals for events in both Championship and Open divisions.  We may break to additional final rounds if numbers merit it in order to comply with NIETOC allowances for final rounds.  We also will award honorable mention ribbons/recognition to those who just miss finals/honor finals.

Draw/Discussion Information:

Both divisions of Extemporaneous Reading will use prose selections 1-15 (all) and will use poetry selections 1-38 (all).
Both divisions of Storytelling will draw from stories 1-15 (all).

This year, we have split Extemporaneous Speaking into two different events – International and United States.
