This is a varsity and BQS tournament in the Cleveland District.

Tournament Location:

Hawken School Gates Mills Campus (Hawken Upper School)

*Please make sure to use this address – you don’t want to end up at Hawken’s Lyndhurst Campus!*

Tournament Events

Individual Events: We will offer a total of four (4) rounds of competition. You may enter up to four (4) competitors in each category. If you have additional entries beyond 4, please enter them – they will be added to our waitlist and we will accept entries as space allows. We have worked with our tech department to ensure that Wi-Fi will be available for extempers in the prep room. More details on this will be given on the day of the tournament. If you have students interested in double-entering, please email us with specific information (names and both events). We are concerned about space. For now, please register the student in only one event. We will try to accommodate double-entered students (except in extemp) if space allows. We will notify you in early November.

Lincoln-Douglas Debate: We will offer five (5) preliminary rounds of competition. We will be using the November/December NSDA Topic (Resolved: Wealthy nations have an obligation to provide development assistance to other nations.). You may enter up to four (4) competitors in LD. If you have additional entries beyond 4, please enter them – they will be added to our waitlist and we will accept entries as space allows.

Policy Debate: We will offer four (4) preliminary rounds of competition (time permitting). We will be using the 2017-2018 NSDA Topic (Resolved: The United States federal government should substantially increase its funding and/or regulation of elementary and/or secondary education in the United States.). You may enter up to four (4) teams in 2P. If you have additional entries beyond 4, please enter them – they will be added to our waitlist and we will accept entries as space allows.

Public Forum Debate: We will offer five (5) preliminary rounds of competition. We will be using the November NSDA Topic (Resolved: The United States should require universal background checks for all gun sales and transfer of ownership.) You may enter up to four (4) teams in PF. If you have additional entries beyond 4, please enter them – they will be added to our waitlist and we will accept entries as space allows.

Student Congress: We will be utilizing the November docket assigned for November 11th from the OSDA for legislation. (It will also be available to all the schools on Speechwire.  Legislation will not be accepted the day of the tournament). We will have 3 preliminary sessions of Congress (approximately 1hr 30mins each). We will be scoring based on judge preference. We will also be using direct questioning. You may enter up to six (6) competitors in Congress. If you have additional entries beyond 6, please enter them – they will be added to our waitlist and we will accept entries as space allows.
