Jefferson High School Speech Team enthusiastically invites you to the 6th Annual Top of the State Speech Tournament on January 27th, 2018.

 

The tournament will offer two flighted rounds of preliminary competition in all fourteen IHSA events. We will also continue the traditional four extra events: Improvised Duet Acting, Original Verse Interpretation, Wretched Interpretation, and a brand new event "Slam Poetry". (For this event, entries will prepare a non-published slam poem with a time-limit of 8 minutes. Poems may be found from anywhere and should be in the spoken-word or slam form, and interpreted as a poem would be in Poetry Interpretation.)   Due to the large number of teams llast year, we will be limiting teams to 3 entries per extra event.  The traditional 14 events will be uncapped.

 

There will be two preparations for Radio and Extemp during the preliminary rounds, using either script/speech for finals. Finals and Next-In finals will be held.

 

Awards will be given to finalists in each event (Novice, Varsity, and Next-in). Sweepstakes awards will be given to the top five schools. 

 

A student may enter up to THREE events. Remember students are responsible for getting to each event in the hour and a half round.

 

Entry fee for each team will be $150.00 per team for up to 36 entries, $200.00 for teams with 37+

 

A team must bring one judge per six entries. (If your team has 48 entries, you must bring 8 judges.) 

 

The tournament will start with registration at 7:00 am, first round prep 7:45 am and round one at 8:30 am.
