You are invited to the January 6, 2018 Le-Win/Orangeville Novice/Varsity Invitational Speech Tournament.

This marks our school's 11th, and for me, my last year hosting a tournament, and we have been very glad to have contributed to the strength and visibility of competitive forensics in Northwest Illinois. Since our debut a decade ago, River Ridge and then Stockton have created tournaments, so it looks like competitive speech in our corner of the world is in good hands. It's been a great 16 years in Lena, and it's been greater to see my friends and colleagues every Saturday in the dead of winter, but nothing lasts forever. Who knows? Maybe there will be a school wherever we retire to that'll need a speech coach.

As I've stated in past years, ours is a good tournament for younger kids (AKA novices), so if you were planning on sending your "A" team into the suburbs that day, send your other kids to us. It may be one of the final times this season they hear their names called out on stage. By the same token, our tournament kicks off the second half of the season for many of us, so it's also a good chance to get your top varsity kids tuned up a little bit more in preparation for the State Series in February. Also, don't think of this as just a "quick and easy" tournament to give your kids something to do on that day. A large part of hosting a tournament is to make sure your kids get good feedback, not just hand out medals. A primary aim is to make your kids better, and we have not lost sight of that.

Because we're inconveniently located in the provinces and our tournament is in January, it wouldn't be a bad idea if you planned on getting here around 7:15. If we get hit with snow, it may take you longer than planned to get here. Your buses will park in the high school lot on the left hand side of the road after you turn onto Fremont Street. You will enter the front doors facing the street. Last year, our tournament was bigger than expected because other tournaments usually held on the same day did not take place. We were then forced to use a few rooms in our Junior High building across the street from the High School. If necessary, we'll do that again.

Here are the basics:

FEE- $100. Still the best bargain in town. Send it now or bring it with you.

JUDGES- One per every five entries.

ENTRIES- Kids may be double entered. The official number of entries per category will be set at three. If you wish to bring more than three per any one category, send me a note first, and we'll talk about it. IF I do say it's OK, my only request is for you to find another judge or two. I'd rather have judges than more money through higher entry fees (but, I won't turn down a few extra bucks either). REMEMBER ALSO-- Our space is limited, even with the other building. It worked out last year in terms of space, but I have to impose limits. So, if you don't mind judging a round in the parking lot or the boiler room, let's be reasonable on how many kids we bring.

STRUCTURE- There will be two preliminary rounds and one final. The first round will be double judged and the second one single judged. The previous three years, we didn't have novice finals because of the tournament's small size. It worked out well that way and we will do the same thing this year. We merely called the top six novices in each category during awards and gave them 1st through 6th place ribbons. Varsity finals will be triple judged if we have the judges. I'm not concerned about ties. If more kids hear their names called out to receive an award, then great.

RADIO & EXTEMP- One prep for radio and extemp (7:45 AM) prelims and one for finals. We provide radio material. In case you're not aware of it, the IHSA Speech Advisory Committee has decided to limit extemp prep to 30 minutes for the State Series and we'll do the same.

AWARDS- Medals for varsity finalists, ribbons for novice, and trophies for the top three teams.

FOOD- Walking tacos and Saporito's pizza plus whatever else I can dream up

COMMENTS, QUESTIONS- Call me at 815/616-0926 (cell) or 815/233-0383 (home)

Hope to see you next January.
