3rd Annual Swamp Classic

Speech & Debate Tournament

Dear Debate Coaches, Judges, and Competitors,

Welcome to the 3rd Annual Swamp Classic at beautiful Everglades High School in Miramar, FL on April 1, 2017. Our team and parents are hard at work to provide you with an outstanding experience.

Sincerely,

A. McLean

Events: We are pleased to offer outstanding competition in Novice & Varsity Public Forum, Novice & Varsity Lincoln-Douglas Debate, Policy Debate, Big Questions, Mixed Extemp, Original Oratory, Duo Interpretation, Program Oral Interpretation, Dramatic Interpretation, Humorous Interpretation, Informative Speaking, Impromptu, Declamation, Varsity and Novice Congress.

Registration will limit each school to 6 competitors in each Speech and Debate category. PF teams will count as a single entry.

Middle School and Novice competitors will compete alongside High Schoolers in Speech and Debate events. We will acknowledge the top middle school competitor in each event, except Big Questions. Please note your Novice competitors in Speech events that only have Varsity divisions.

The tournament requires a minimum of 10 competitors to make each event viable. If not, we will remove the event(s) from competition.

Rounds: We are very happy to provide a straight 5 round tournament for IEs and three, 2 hour Congressional Debate sessions. Big Questions will participate in a minimum of three rounds.

Debate will compete in five straight rounds. If necessary, we will drop a round and/or flight rounds, depending on the size of the tournament.

Awards: The awards ceremony will take place as close to 5:30 PM as possible. We will recognize the top middle school competitor and novice in each event, except Big Questions.

We will award the top three competitors in Big Questions Debate.

Congress will be awarded the top three awards for each chamber in addition to best middle school competitor in the Novice division.

Internet Access: The Everglades High School Debate Team conforms to the NSDA guidelines for technology use and they will be strictly enforced. This access will NOT include any live, real-time communication with another person. Such communication will result in the forfeiture of that round and could result in disqualification from the tournament. This does not prohibit non-electronic communication between debate partners during prep time. Internet access will NOT be allowed in Extemp Prep.

Judges: To run a smooth and efficient tournament, we will need you to provide 1 judge for every 5 IE entries (including Congress) and 1 judge for every 2 debate entries (per event) or any fraction thereof. We will be VERY limited in our ability to hire any judges, so it is essential that you provide your quota. Schools missing judges will be charged $50.00 for every obligation not covered.

Entry fee: Entry fees will be $15.00 per competitor (so $30.00 per entry in Policy, PF, and Duo). This will include all student meals. Double entry will be permitted in speech events only for an additional $5.00. Due to a complication on Speechwire, double entry fees will need to be updated manually. I will update final invoices for double entered students once registration closes. If you require your invoice to be updated prior to Monday the 27th, please email me directly and I will adjust those fees. Wait listed entries will be moved off the list beginning Monday, March 27, 2017 at 5:00 PM.
