Greetings!

You are cordially invited to attend the first annual Archbishop Bergan Junior High Speech Invitational, slated for Saturday, April 1, 2017.  Due to the meets in the central part of the state taking place early, and those in the Omaha area being later, it is our hope to bridge the gap and field a variety of teams competing from diverse areas.  The contest will be open to any 6th, 7th, or 8th grade students, and we would be happy to meet with prospective students to answer any questions they might have.

We plan to offer the following nine events for competition:

Duet Acting:  10-minute-maximum cutting, use of table and 2 chairs allowed (we will provide these in each room), scripts will be allowed but discouraged (their use will not disqualify a team, but will make it more difficult to win).

Oratory:  8-minute-maximum original speech, can be Persuasive, Informative, or Entertaining in nature, visual aids allowed (regardless of the nature of the speech - this is contrary to the high school Persuasive rules).  Presenting from a manuscript is optional.

Poetry:  8-minute-maximum program (can be one poem or a selection of several poems), no minimum time limit.  Use of a script is required.

Humorous Interp:  10-minute-maximum cutting.  Use of a script is optional.

Dramatic Interp:  10-minute-maximum cutting.  Use of a script is optional.

Declamation:  10-minute-maximum non-original speech.  Use of a script is optional.

Impromptu:  10-minutes maximum for preparation and speaking combined.  Use of a notecard is optional.

Extemporaneous:  5-minute maximum, no minimum.  Use of a notecard is optional.  The prep room will allow the use of electronic data storage, however we will check to make sure no internet usage occurs.  30-minute prep time.

OID (Readers’ Theatre):  15-minute maximum.  3-5 speakers, no deliberate touching allowed.  Both on-stage and off-stage focus are acceptable.  Each speaker must be in possession of a script during the performance.  Use of boxes or stools for staging is allowed.

Competitors may double-enter, however no triple-entries will be allowed.

We will present medals for 1st - 6th place in each event, with the exception of OID, in which we will award medals to all members of the top 3 teams.  Should any events surpass 30 entries (or 10 for OID), more places will be awarded in that event.  We will also award ribbons on the ballots for the top 3 speakers in each round.  We reserve the right to cancel any event with low numbers, or to combine HI and DI into one event, should it be in the best interest of the tournament.

Team scores based upon final placings will be calculated, with plaques being awarded to the champion and runner-up teams.  We will follow the state speech format (20-18-16-14-12-10).

Our tournament will tentatively run as follows:
7:30  Registration Opens
8:30  Extemp Draws for Round 1 Begin
8:45  Drop/Add Meeting
9:00  Round 1
9:45  Extemp Draw for Round 2
10:15  Round 2
11:15  Lunch Break
11:30  Extemp Draw for Round 3
12:00  Round 3
~1:45  Awards

Keep in mind that we are limited on the number of rooms available, so if our entries exceed those limits we will conduct the tournament with two flights, placing half the events in flight A and   the other half in flight B.  In that case each speech would only be presented twice, but we would attempt to place 2 judges in one of the rounds to provide for the same number of ballots and still end in the early afternoon.

We are working to put together a lunch that your students can order, which will most likely include a slice of pizza, a side item, and drink.  More info will be sent about this as the meet gets closer, but the goal is for you to be able to send in lunch orders with your entries and collect the fees all at once.

Fees are $6 per entry (OID’s count as one entry, as do Duets), and we ask that you provide one judge for each 6 entries or portion there-of (6 entries = 1 judge, 7 entries = 2 judges).  The fee for each uncovered slot will be an extra $10 per entry.  (Example:  8 entries, 1 judge = $48 for entry fees + $20 for 2 uncovered slots = $68.)

Experienced high school students are allowed to judge, however we ask that you take some time to go over the ballot criteria with them, as well as what makes a ballot effective vs. ineffective.  We want to ensure that all students get worthwhile feedback throughout the day.

Entries will be due by 5:00 pm on Tuesday, March 29th.  No refunds will be given for drops after this time.  Checks can be made payable to Bergan High School, 545 E 4th St, Fremont, NE  68025.

Thank you for considering attending our meet, and we hope to see you in Fremont!

Sincerely,

Chris Kabes
