To All Speech & Debate Coaches:

The Shelbyville High School Speech Team cordially invites you to attend our third annual speech meet.  The tournament will be held on Saturday, January 28th, 2017.  Registration will be on speechwire.com.

All speech events except Congress will be offered. All IHSFA rules apply except as noted.

Extemp will draw rounds 1 and 3; topics will come from the major news magazines or major news events from September 1, 2016 forward. Students may use a note card.

Discussion: Artifacts will be released one week prior to the meet. They can be found in the “Files to Download” section of SpeechWire.  There will be no prep time prior to the start of the round.

Broadcasting: Rd. 1—5 min newscast Rd. 2—2 minute original editorial Rd. 3—same as round 1; Rd. 4—OTS (2-min prep, 2 min deliver). Materials/Topics will be released one week prior to the meet.  They can be found in the “Files to Download” section of SpeechWire.  There will be no prep time prior to the start of the round.

Doubling/Tripling:  Permitted in all events except for Discussion. Tripling permitted if, and only if, third event is Improv Duo. We will audit entries and drop violators of this rule.

Improv Duo rules are as follows:

2-minute prep
3-minute perform
Eye contact ok
Competitors may not touch each other
One classroom chair is available as a prop

Each school may enter up to 40 entries.  Schools may enter a maximum of (5) five students in each event. Students will not be able to pick up drops from another school. Schools must provide one judge for every five entries or fraction thereof.  A failure to bring all assigned judges will make a team ineligible for sweepstakes. Single teams only--no non-sweeps teams.

The top ten schools and top ten students in each event will be awarded. Sweeps are based on 10 points for a first through 1 point for 10th. Awards will begin around 2:30.

Food will be available at the meet. This is how we fund the tournament and pay for the awards, the judges’ lounge, etc. Please do not bring in food and drinks for your team. Help us continue to be able to host by allowing us to meet our expenses for this tournament through concessions at this meet.

Registration is from 6:45-7:30 a.m.  Extemp draw and first round of all other events begin at 8:00 a.m.  There will be four straight rounds. Speechwire entries/judges due Monday, January 23rd by 4:00 p.m. I will be using speechwire.com for registration and to run the meet. Please register names on speechwire.

All questions about this meet should be sent to ejsmall@shelbycs.org or tmhasser@shelbycs.org.

We look forward to seeing everyone on the 28th!
