Winter Wonder 2016

Dear Speech and Debate Coach:

You are cordially invited to participate in the 23rd Annual Winter Wonder Speech and Debate Tournament on December 10, 2016.

Events:  The following events will be offered: CX Debate, JV CX Debate, LD Debate, Public Forum Debate, National Extemporaneous Speaking, International Extemporaneous Speaking, Drama, Humor, Poetry, POI, Duo Interp, Original Oratory, Informative, Impromptu Speaking, Improvisational Pairs, and Congressional Debate. Three rounds and finals will be held in all events.

Entries: A maximum of four (4) entries will be allowed in each event, except Congress, which will be limited to 10 entries per school. Additional entries can be placed on the waitlist and we will accommodate those entries if space is available.

Registration: All registration will occur at www.speechwire.com. Registration will close on Friday December 3, or earlier if the tournament fills. Registrations are handled on a first-come, first-served basis.  As always, we would appreciate knowing of any drops in advance of the tournament, in order to help the scheduling of rounds. Please see the fees section for fee information.

Rules:

  • Competition is open to 9-12 grade students representing the school in which they are officially enrolled and doing so with the permission of their school administration and/or coaches.
  • We will use all current NSDA topics in each of the debates.
  • We will use the NSDA Cross-examination format in the final rounds of National and International Extemporaneous Speaking.
  • CHSAA rules and event descriptions will be used for CHSAA events.
  • NSDA Congress rules will be used for Congress.
  • The rules for Improvisational Pairs, Impromptu, POI, and Informative are attached and posted at www.speechwire.com

Doubling Rules:

  • CX, PF, and LD Debaters may not double-enter.
  • Congressional Debate students may not double-enter.
  • Students in events may double-enter in two events. Students are responsible for making it to their rounds. Students must pay attention to the schedule because we may not be using a full wave system- some events may occur in the same time period.
  • Students can only enter one Extemp event.
  • Extempers that double-enter risk losing part of their prep time.

JV/Varsity CX Rules:

  • Varsity CX Debate is open to all CX debate teams.
  • JV CX debate is limited to freshman and sophomore CX debaters or students in their first year of competition.
  • In JV CX, no Kritiks or counterplans are allowed.
  • In JV CX, we will employ the NFHS Novice case limits, meaning that all teams should limit themselves to these four case areas:
    • Cooperation with China in Outer Space
    • Signing a Bilateral Investment Treaty With China
    • A grand bargain on Taiwan: Repealing the Taiwan Relations Act in exchange for Chinese concessions in the South China Sea
    • Eliminating the U.S. Ballistic Missile Defense Installations in East Asia in exchange for China’s assistance in stopping North Korean nuclearization.

Fees and Payment: The entry fee will be $10.00 per student in events and $8.00 per student in Congress, based upon the pre-registration numbers on Wednesday, November 30. Changes in pre-registration will be reflected in the final entry fees if made via the web site by November 30. After that time, net increases in entries will result in increases in final entry fees, while net decreases in entries will not reduce your final entry fees. Please make checks payable to CCHS Speech and Debate Team. Please mail payment to Marti Benham, Cherry Creek High School, 9300 E. Union Avenue, Greenwood Village, CO 80111.

Judging:  Each school must provide one judge who will be available to judge all day and available to judge all events entered by their school.  Judges are responsible for checking for ballots at the appropriate times.

Awards:  Trophies and ribbons will be awarded to all finalists. Numerous superior and excellent ribbons will be given as awards.  Trophies, gavels, and ribbons will be awarded in Congress.

Final Registration:  Final registration will be from 7:00 to 7:30 AM, with rounds beginning at 8:00 AM. Please plan to arrive at registration early. Schools not registered by 7:30am may be dropped from the tournament. Awards are scheduled for 7:30pm.

Congressional Debate: Please submit bills and resolutions by Friday, November 18 at 3pm by email to mbenham@cherrycreekschools.org in PDF format or Word format. The docket will be available on www.speechwire.com on or before Monday, November 21.

Food: Lunch and munchies will be served to coaches and judges. A complete concession stand will sell pizza, salads, fruit, etc. to students.

Miscellaneous Details: Please note that a responsible coach must be present on site with students at all times.  Please also note that Cherry Creek Public Schools bans all use of tobacco by students and adults in or on all school grounds and facilities.
