IUPUC and Ivy Tech Columbus
5th Annual Invitational Speech Tournament
Saturday, December 10, 2016

Location:  Joint campus of IUPUC and Ivy Tech (for online map reference, please use 4555 Central Ave., Columbus, IN  47203)

Time:  First round starts 8:30am (extemp prep at 8am).

Format:  Four straight rounds of competition

Events:  Broadcasting, Discussion, Dramatic, Humorous, Impromptu, Improv Duo, Informative, IX, MEGADUO, Original Oratory, Original Performance, Prose, Poetry, POI, USX, and World Schools Debate.

Doubling/Tripling:  Permitted in all events except for Discussion. Tripling permitted if, and only if, third event is Improv Duo. We will audit entries and drop violators of this rule.

Discussion: Artifacts will be released one week prior to the meet. They can be found in the “Files to Download” section of SpeechWire.  There will be no prep time prior to the start of the round.

Broadcasting: Rd. 1—5 minute news program (competitors choose their own genre for music intros, outros), commercial should be for Cafe Bustelo espresso roast coffee; Rd. 2—2 minute original editorial on voter fraud; Rd. 3—same as round 1; Rd. 4—OTS (2-min prep, 2 min deliver).

Extemp: Draw every round, 30 minutes prep.

WORLD SCHOOLS DEBATE: Prepared topics--(1) This House believes that feminist movements have achieved their primary objectives. (2) This House would ban straight ticket voting.

Improv Duo rules are as follows:

2-minute prep
3-minute perform
Eye contact ok
Competitors may not touch each other
One classroom chair is available as a prop

Each school is allowed 5 entries per event.  Team entries will be capped at 40 per school. Overall cap for the tournament will be 300 entries total. Single teams only--no non-sweeps teams. We are doing this primarily because there aren’t many spaces available to congregate in large groups on the campus.

Judges:  Please provide one (1) judge for every 7 (seven) entries or fraction thereof. IUPUC and Ivy Tech will offer a pool of judges, which eases the requirement on schools bringing entries.

Trophies will be awarded to the top ten teams, and ribbons to the top ten contestants in each event.

This meet will take place in three or four campus buildings—we encourage that your students wear comfortable shoes.  Please make sure your teams are in authorized areas throughout the day.

Concessions will be available throughout the day.  Fast food or restaurants of any kind are 2-5 miles away, so please avail yourselves of our concessions to help us offset the costs of our meet.

The meet will be managed through SpeechWire. Team registrations are due by Tuesday, December 6, 2016, at 5pm.

All questions about this meet should be sent to acarmon@iupuc.edu. Other contact info can be found on the Speechwire tournament page.

We look forward to hosting you on our campus on December 10th!
