Dear Speech Coach:
You are cordially invited to Riverside Junior High for our first speech tournament on Saturday, February 11, 2017.  We will follow Indiana Middle School Event Rules in all of the IHSFA Middle School Speech Events.
Each school is invited to enter up to 30 entries for the varying events with no more than 5 entries per event.
Doubling is permitted in all events EXCEPT for Extemporaneous, Radio and Discussion. Please have your doublers sign in at their second event so that the judge knows that he/she is present.
Time limits are: Impromptu = 8 minutes to prep and speak. Extemporaneous = 7 minutes maximum.  Prose and Poetry = 4 - 8 minutes. All other interpretive events = 5 - 10 minutes.
Extemporaneous Topics will be drawn 30 minutes before the first round.
Broadcasting/Radio will be given commercial topics 30 minutes before the first round to write a 1 minute advertisement on a provided item or service.  They should have a two minute news cast that they have written and brought with them.  There will be a 1 minute on-the-spot reading that the students will be given to perform.
We were thinking about trying something different given that this is for many the last meet of the season.  We are modeling High School Discussion topics using artifacts.
Discussion entries should be prepared to discuss the following questions. One for each round.
1.Music: My Shot (Rise Up Remix)

2.Mass Media: An Amazon Echo may be the key to solving a murder case.

3.Literature: The Wind and the Sun.

We will be posting scores for coaches only.
There will be a judge, coach, bus driver, volunteer room with goodies for our guests.
Please encourage your students to make purchases from our concessions for snacks, drinks, breakfast and lunch.
We will run 3 straight rounds at 9:00am, 10:15am and 11:30am followed by an awards ceremony upon completion of tabulation by SpeechWire, hopefully around 1:30pm.  There will be ribbons going to 10th place and the top schools will receive trophies.
Please bring 1 judge for every 5 entries or fraction thereof ie: 26 entries = 6 judges. High school students with 150 NFL points may judge.   Please encourage your judges to start on time and have students who are doubling to perform first and then permit them to leave for their next event.  Students should not enter an event room before the judge.  Remind judges that 1=FIRST=BEST.  Ballots and critique sheets will need to be turned in after each round. There will be a judges meeting at 8:30am.
Please have your pre-registrations in on SpeechWire prior to February 1st. Any changes made after the the cutoff on SpeechWire please contact Cathy Whelan – cwhelan@hse.k12.in.us  or (317)682-8566 and we will do our best to accommodate you. Thank you.
Final Registration will take place Saturday morning February 11th from 8:00am to 8:30am .
I have found speech kids and coaches to be some of the most conscientious people I’ve met.  We are having this meet in hopes of being able to have more in the future and the care and keeping of our building, kids and staff will go a long way.   Please encourage no cell phones, tablets or talking in event rooms.
