Dear Forensics Colleague:
You and your squad are cordially invited to attend the 2017 College of DuPage Frank-ly Speaking Tournament, named in honor of forensics icon and former College of DuPage Director of Forensics Frank Tourangeau. This year’s tournament will be held Saturday, January 21, 2017 (IE).
We will offer 11 individual events following Phi Rho Pi guidelines and an experimental event, Electronic Expository (a description is included later in this invitation).
Please pay special attention to the Phi Rho Pi event descriptions, which do not always directly correspond with AFA or NFA guidelines.
We will hold open finals for all events, which means that students have the potential to qualify events for AFA and NFA, to the same extent they would at any open tournament. If entries warrant, we will hold community college division finals in addition to the open finals. Details are included in the invitation.
Note: we will be hosting a parliamentary debate tournament on Friday, January 20 (the day before the IE tournament) with four prelim rounds and an open and community college final. An invitation will be sent under separate cover.

EXPERIMENTAL EVENT: ELECTRONIC EXPOSITORY
The intention of this event is to provide students with an opportunity to practice presenting with electronic visual aids, the predominant method of public speaking used in the workplace.
Students competing in Electronic Expository will deliver a prepared 5-7 minute presentation incorporating presentation software (i.e. PowerPoint, Prezi, or other presentation software) to describe, clarify, illustrate, or define an object, idea, concept, or process. Students should come prepared to access their visual aids in multiple ways (jump drive, flash drive, email, etc.) We do not recommend using nontraditional presentation software to help insure compatibility with computer systems at COD.
The use of notes is acceptable.
Students will be provided:
The competition rooms will be unlocked before the tournament so students can verify that their electronic presentation software is compatible with COD’s computers. Students should save their presentations in multiple formats such as on a USB as well as emailing the presentation to oneself.
Use of visual/audio aids will be evaluated using the following criteria: · Considered objective and audience o Does the visual/audio aid enhance audience understanding of the information/topic being presented? o Did the speaker consider the audience in choosing the visual/audio aid? · Large enough and easy to read o Is the visual image large enough to see easily from any spot in the classroom? Is audio easy to hear from any spot in the room (or not too loud)? o Is the image clear (i.e. not pixilated)? o Are visual images uncluttered? Communicating one piece of information at a time? · Color and text appropriate o Did the speaker follow guidelines for use of color (dark text on light background/light text on dark background)? o Does the use of color (background and text) enhance communication of the message? o Did the speaker follow the rule of 5x5 (nor more than 5 lines of text, no more than 5 words per line) ? o Is the font clean, clear, and easy to read? · Illustrates verbal message; provides interpretation/explanation o Does the speaker incorporate the visual image or audio into the presentation (i.e. reference the visual/audio aid? Provide a reason to look or listen?) o Does the speaker provide a clear explanation of the visual/audio aid? · Effective timing and placement o Does the speaker incorporate the visual/audio aid at a time when it is relevant? o Does the speaker use it and lose it? o Does the speaker show evidence of having practiced with his/her visual/audio aids? GENERAL INFORMATION
PARTICIPATION: Any regularly enrolled student is eligible to enter as many as six events; however, the participant may not enter more than three events from each grouping (one person may enter two duos in Group B as two of his or her three events).

There is no limit on entries per event; however, if a school enters more students than there are sections in any one event, the tournament director may place more than one student from the same school in the same section. This may be done even if there are enough sections to allow for the best use of judges. Triple entered students (TE) must sign in to all three events prior to the round. Judges will not be required to wait for students that have not signed in.
FEES: $8.00 per individual event slot. One judge for every six individual event slots must be provided. A limited number of hired judges can be provided at the rate of $10.00 per uncovered individual event slot. Change/drop fees range from $5.00 to $25.00 (see DEADLINES section). Make all checks payable to Lauren Morgan.
ELIMINATON ROUNDS: Preliminary rounds for individual events will be randomly paired. The six participants with the best rankings will advance to the open division final round. Standard tie breakers will be used. The six community college participants with the best rankings that have not advanced into open division finals will advance to the two-year college division finals; however, we will not advance more than half of the field of community college competitors into a final round. Again, standard tie breakers will be used. We will do our best to provide a full panel of three judges for all finals; however, if we have a limited number of judges available, community college finals may only be assigned one judge. Awards will be given to all participants advancing to a final round.
TEAM SWEEPSTAKES: For individual events, awards will be given to the top three community college teams (1st place receiving the Jim Collie Community College Sweepstakes Award) and to the top five colleges overall. Sweepstakes for both divisions will be based on final rounds only. Sweepstakes points earned in the community college division will not count in the open division. Sweepstakes points earned in the open division by a community college participant will count in the community college division. The following point allocation will be used:

THE JODIE BRIGGS INDIVIDUAL SWEEPSTAKES AWARD: A contestant must be entered into a minimum of any four events to qualify. Awards will be given to the top five overall students and the top three community college students. The winners will be determined by the largest number of sweepstakes points earned for their team according to the previously listed schedule. Entry in individual sweepstakes is the responsibility of the coach when making the entry.
FOOD: For those of you who have attended our tournament the past several years, we’ve had the fortunate experience of participating in a winter wonderland. If you want to avoid driving to find food for your team, you have the option to place an order through Potbelly’s online and have it delivered to the tournament. Follow these steps below:
1. Log on to www.potbellys.com 2. Go to “Our Stores” and click on “Store Locator” 3. Enter “60137” under “Address/Zip” 4. Click order online for the store located at “552 Roosevelt Road” in Glen Ellyn 5. You will have to create an account (unless you already have one) to place your order 6. Place your order 7. Under “Who is this item for?” enter the name of your school (i.e, CLC, NIU, etc…) 8. Under “Special Requests” enter “Use College of DuPage forensics credit card.” (Please keep in mind that we are NOT paying for your food, but this way everything is kept together. You will pay us back when you register the day of the tournament.) 9. Submit order 10. We will verify with you as well as with Potbelly’s to confirm your order

DEADLINES: Changes/Drops should be made by the coach through Speechwire.
Please register your students by 9 p.m. CST on Wednesday, January 18. Changes made after 9 p.m. on Wednesday will incur a $10.00 charge. A $25.00 fee per slot will be charged for any drop made after Thursday. A $40.00 fee per slot will be charged for any drop made after Friday but before 7:00 AM on Saturday, January 21, 2017. A $60.00 fee per slot will be charged for any drop bade after 7:00 AM on Saturday, January 21, 2017, and drop made at registration AND UNEXPLAINED NO-SHOWS IN THE FIRST ROUND.
A $30 fee per dropped judge will be assessed for any judges dropped after 9 p.m. CST on Wednesday, January 18. A $60.00 fee per dropped judge will be assessed for judges dropped after Thursday.

In addition, four over-riding rules govern events: 1. All public events must be the original work of the contestant. 2. No speech or program, in part or in its entirety, may have been used by the contestant prior to September 2016. 4.
