The Moorhead High School Speech Team would be thrilled to have you join us for the MOORHEAD SPUD SPEECH INVITATIONAL February 24th-25th. We are committed to awarding excellence and encouraging teams from across the state with creative trophies, ribbons galore, fun coach swag, and lounges filled with tasty food. 
 
Our team is excited to offer the Spuds Speech Invitational original category - Extemporaneous Musical Theater. Please encourage your speakers/vocalists to sign up for this fun event. It is a tournament highlight and a great end to two days of talented competition.
 
Moorhead is a bid tournament for the National Individual Events Tournament of Champions. Students who earn top honors in humor, drama, duo, and original oratory will earn a bid to the corresponding tournament.
 
We expect a wide variety of schools from across MN and a great cross-section of competition for all. If you have questions about the Spud Speech Invitational, please don't hesitate to send me an email. On behalf of the entire Spuds coaching staff, we hope to see you at our tournament!

TOURNAMENT SPECIFICS
 
When: FRIDAY AND SATURDAY - Feb. 24-25th, 2017
 
Where: Moorhead High School, 2300 4th Ave S, Moorhead, MN
 
Registration: 4:00PM - FRIDAY February 24th
 
Format: 4 Rounds and Finals (top 7) and Honor Finals (8-14). We also give trophies to the top novice in every division.  
 
Fees: $7.00 per speaker. Make checks to "Moorhead High School Speech".
 
Rules: MSHSL and NSDA Rules Followed. Double entries Allowed in ALL events. Discussion will begin 15 minutes later to accommodate double entering.
 
Judge ratio: One judge for every 7 speakers. A limited number of judges are available for $80.00. Please notify Rebecca if you need a hired judge (rmlarson@moorheadschools.org).
 
Awards:  The coveted Mr. Potato Head Trophies - Final, Honor Final, and Novice trophies. Team Awards for the top schools in A and AA team divisions.  
 
We promise a GREAT concession stand and a well-stocked Hospitality Room for Coaches and Judges.
 
Registration Deadline: Monday, Feb. 20th @ 5:00PM.
 
Drop Deadline:  Wednesday, February 22nd @ 5:00PM. Teams will be charged the registration fee for each student dropped after this date; however, please continue to make changes online.
 
All draw events will have thirty-minute preparation times. Extemporaneous Reading and Storytelling contestants should be prepared for all stories/poems. Students will draw for all three preliminary rounds and finals.  The Discussion tasks will be taken from Section II of the MSHSL outline. The discussion outline is available at www.mshsl.org.
 
COACHES PLEASE ENCOURAGE YOUR STUDENTS TO COMPETE IN EXTEMPORANEOUS MUSICAL THEATER.  Rounds 1-4 will include singing any pre-selected musical theater song from a karaoke track.The final rounds are extemporaneous and held prior to the awards ceremony. Keep checking in for information and updates on the tournament page regarding tracks, preparation, sound, and lights.
 
This schedule is a bit different from past years, and we are excited to offer 4 rounds of competition for ALL. We hope that returning teams will embrace a slightly different schedule to allow for more critiques and feedback and we encourage teams throughout the state to make the drive to Fargo-Moorhead to check out the Spuds Invitational.
