2017 Woodbury Royal Tournament!

Hi Speech Coaches,

As you make preparations for the 2017 season, Woodbury will be hosting our second Woodbury Royal Tournament. Last year, we had a great turnout! We will have strong competition, great food, fun trophies, and will work diligently to get you home in a timely manner. We will be hosting our tournament on Saturday, March 4, 2017. We know you have many choices when picking tournaments, but we would love for you to join us!

We will host a tournament with both Honor and Varsity Final rounds, and will be including Impromptu as a category at our tournament. We only charge $3 for impromptu to give more students an opportunity to try it!

Registration Deadline:

  • TEAM DEADLINE: Monday, February 27th at 5:00pm

  • ENTRY DEADLINE: Wednesday, March 1st at 3:00pm.
After that time, all drops will be assessed a drop fee.

Day of the Tournament Drops: Please make any changes as soon as possible on Speechwire until the date of the tournament. Any drops the morning of the tournament should be sent to Suzanne White at (651) 247-0884. Texts or calls welcome.

Entry Limits:  Discussion students may not double enter in a draw category. Discussion will be staggered to allow for double entries in this category.

Entry Fees:

  •
$7.00 per entry for ALL events (including Duo).
  • If there is interest, we will gladly at POI to our lineup. Please email me if you would be interested.
  • PLEASE MAKE CHECKS OUT TO: WOODBURY SPEECH BOOSTERS

Judging Requirements:

  • Teams are required to bring 1 judge for every 7 entries.
  • Additional judges will be available to hire for $80.00. Please let Suzanne know ASAP if you anticipate needing judges.

Tournament Format: There will be three preliminary rounds of competition followed by honor and final rounds.

Food:

  • Food will be available for purchase throughout the day for students at the Woodbury concession stand.
(Credit cards and cash accepted!)
  • The Woodbury Speech Boosters will provide breakfast, lunch and snacks for judges and coaches.

As many teams prepare for sections: discussion will be using section III of the outline, and all stories for extemp reading, storytelling and poetry will be used.

We have decided that we will NOT BE CHARGING AN ENTRY FEE FOR IMPROMPTU. Please enter as many students as you would like, just bring enough judges to accommodate your entry. One thing we stress on our team, is to remember that speech should always be fun at the end of the day, even when competitively it doesn’t go as we would like it to. Therefore, we want to give as many people an opportunity to try something FUN this tournament.

In the spirit of making impromptu more entertaining and enjoyable, we will feature prompts from the following sources:

Impromptu
Round 1: All quotations will come from The Onion headlines
Round 2: All quotations will come from the MSHSL Speech Rules and Policies Handbook
Round 3: Students will pull an object from a bag along with the prompt, "What does this object represent, and why is it important?"

Final: All quotations will come from the MN Speech Confessions Twitter

Trump-Free Extemp Questions: In an effort to broaden the knowledge-base required of extempers, the Woodbury Royal Tournament will provide this year’s competitors with trump-free extemp questions. While students are obviously permitted to answer questions in any way they choose, we have decided, following feedback throughout the year that students are tired of answering the same domestic questions every tournament, that no question this weekend will require discussing President Trump. At this point in the season, we believe this will be a good opportunity to think about other issues, before ramping up to more traditional domestic questions as the rest of the season concludes.

Domestic

-All questions will come from the Star Tribune and Pioneer Press
Round 2: Regional Issues
-All questions will come from the Chicago Tribune, Indianapolis Star, Columbus Dispatch, and Detroit Free Press
