October 6, 2016

Dear Speech Coaches,

The New Castle High School speech team would like to cordially invite you to our tournament to be held on November 19, 2016. Registration will take place in the main office from 6:45-7:15 a.m. with extemp draw starting at 7:30 and round one of all events starting at 8:00. All events will go four straight rounds.

Registration is on speechwire.com. Please click on the tournament and let me know yes or no if you will be attending ASAP so I can get an idea of how many schools I will have.

I will accept entries through Tuesday, November 15, at 4 p.m. I need these names/numbers to be as accurate as possible for they will be the basis for my food count.

Changes can be made through Friday at 3:00 p.m. through Speechwire; therefore, if you have a drop or add or name change, etc., you should go to your entry directly and make revisions. Anything after that time, e-mail the change to me.

Students may double at their own risk in all events EXCEPT discussion, congress, and versatility. You may enter 50 students, max of 5 per event.

You need to provide one judge for every 5 entries or fraction thereof. Six entries equal 2 judges. Failure to bring required judges will result in loss of sweepstakes.

Events offered: all IHSFA speech events (this includes new events POI, informative, and the combined duo) plus Congress and Versatility. Students are not allowed to compete with materials they used last season unless otherwise noted.

Versatility students will compete in poetry, prose, or POI round one; original oratory or informative for round two (notes may be used, but may be used as a factor in determining your score in the round); humor or drama for round three; and impromptu for round four. Students may use material from last year for ONE of the rounds of versatility, but the other two prepared rounds must be new material for this season. Points will be scored by individual round results as well as overall results. (Individual rounds will score 3, 2, 1, and ½ .) Versatility is limited to one person per team with a maximum of 6 entries. If you want a versatility spot reserved prior to entering , email me at sdelay@ncweb.me and give me your school name and the name of the student who will be competing in versatility. Once the slots are claimed, the event will be filled.

Radio contestants need to bring a five-minute program for rounds 1 and 4 which should include music lead in and lead out (your choice of music), an original commercial for any insurance company, and a newscast. Students will also need to bring for round 2 a two-minute ORIGINAL (written by the student based on research and his/her own opinion) editorial about the Electoral College. Students will compete round 3 with an on-the-spot round with a picture and caption of a recent event with two minutes of prep and two minutes to speak.

Congress will debate bills/resolutions 1, 11, 13, and 14.

Extemp will draw rounds 1 and 3 only. Contestants may use a notecard.

Discussion will use the Socratic Seminar format and topics will be released the Sunday prior to the tournament through speechwire.

The top ten schools and top ten students in each event will be awarded. Sweeps are based on 10 point for a first through 1 point for 10th.

Awards are scheduled to begin around 2:30.

Food and beverages will be for sale at the tournament. This is how we fund the tournament and pay for the awards, the custodian, the judges’ lounge, etc. Please do not bring in food and drinks for your team. Help us continue to be able to host by allowing us to meet our expenses for this tournament through concessions at this meet.

Sincerely,

Susan M. Delay & the New Castle Speech Team
