"Speaking for the Cure"

The Speech and Debate team from Western High School invites you to the first SFCFL tournament on Saturday, October 22, 2016.   Remember, you must be a paid member of SFCFL to attend this tournament; however, you may bring your membership information and fees the day of the tournament.  Additionally, any student who wishes to compete at the Grand Final Tournament in March must attend one complete SFCFL tournament. Once again this season, the SFCFL will work in conjunction with a service project which benefits the SFCFL community as a whole. As in the past, the SFCFL 1 in October will be dedicated to everyone battling cancer in our "Speaking for the Cure" campaign. Donations will be collected at registration online and at the tournament for the Broward Cancer Center and the pink campaign for cancer awareness. Bracelets will be distributed to all participants and we encourage all to wear pink: ties, suits, shirts, polos etc.

Events offered:  Novice & Varsity Public Forum, Novice & Varsity Lincoln Douglas Debate, Varsity & Novice Congress, Novice & Varsity Team Debate (Policy), Mixed Extemp, Original Oratory, Duo Interpretation, Oral Interpretation, Dramatic Performance, Declamation.

The awards will feature the SFCFL pink ribbon for cancer awareness. 

Numbers:     6 in each category (6 in each Congress area) 

DOUBLE ENTRY IS ALLOWED.

Entry fee:   $15.00 per student –includes lunch - payable to SFCFL. Entry fee is charged from the time you enter a student on the web site.

Judges:      1 judge for every 5 IE (including Congress), and 1 judge for every 2 debaters or fraction thereof, but you cannot mix TD, PFD, or LD judges. Please make certain you have the correct number of debate judge. Schools with more than 35 IE competitors will need only 7 IE judges.

NO high school student judges.

DEADLINE:          Entries will be accepted through Tuesday October 18, 2016.  Changes and drops may be made until Friday, October 21, 2016 at 8:00 a.m., but you will be charged the entry fee for any student originally entered.  The web site will be closed Tuesday night. Drops after Tuesday night and before Friday at 8:00 a.m. will be charged the entry fee.  After 8:00 a.m. on Friday, drops will incur $10.00 in addition to the entry fee.   Please e-mail me any changes/drops, judge names after Wednesday evening.  Drops on the day of tournament or “discovered” during the actual tournament will result in the entry fee forfeiture plus a $20.00 penalty. 

 Lunch:           Western High School will provide lunches which are included in the entry fee.  Please make certain to designate choices on the web site:  choice of turkey, veggie, or ham subs, chips, & soda.  Please designate lunch choices on the web site by Tuesday, October 18, 2016. If you miss the deadline on meals, the entire school entry will receive the default sub option (turkey) with no chance of opt out.

Please remember to order lunch for your judges/coaches separately; cost for lunch for judges/coaches is $7.00. Judge and coach lunches will be automatically added if you choose to ignore this item. Remember this is a closed-campus tournament; if you or your team leaves campus for lunch, the entire team may be disqualified.

Registration:  Registration begins promptly at 7:00 a.m. and will close at 7:45 a.m.  Please be prompt.

Forfeit Rules:  All rounds will be subject to the judge-arrival-plus-ten-minutes forfeit rule for students.

Congress bills/resolutions:  e-mail by Friday October 07, 2016 to dariocamara@gmail.com.   You may enter no more than 2 pieces of legislation per school.  If you are entering both novice and varsity students, you may send 2 pieces of legislation for each or 4 B/R total. Legislation will be posted on www.sfcfl.org under the link "Topics & Legislation.”
