Dear Coaches,
The Carolina Debating Union formally invites you to the first ever Tarheel Speech and Debate Tournament on Saturday, March 4. As you may know, this tournament was originally scheduled for the weekend of October 7-8, but due to a variety of conflicts on campus including a home UNC Football game, we decided to move the tournament to this new date.

Events Offered
N/V Lincoln Douglas Debate
N/V Public Forum Debate
N/V Student Congress
Dramatic Interpretation
Humorous Interpretation
Program Oral Interpretation
Duo Interpretation
Original Oratory
Extemporaneous Speaking

Debate Events will consist of four rounds. We reserve the rights to combine Novice and Varsity debate events (and Congress) in case of a small pool size.
Speech Events will consist of four rounds and a break to finals. Double Entries are allowed for Speech Events.
The topic for Lincoln-Douglas Debate will be:
Resolved: The United States ought to guarantee the right to housing.
The topic for Public Forum Debate will be:
Resolved: The United States should no longer pressure Israel to work toward a two-state solution.
Congress Legislation is posted under Files to Dowload tab in Speechwire. We decided to use 5 bills from the Carolina West District Tournament and 5 bills from the Tarheel East District Tournament to lessen the burden of preparation on short notice.
Extemporaneous Speaking topic areas are:
Round 1: Immigration
Round 2: Domestic Policy
Round 3: Africa
Round 4: International Economics
Round 5: Democracy

Registration & General Assembly
Registration will begin at 7 AM in Carroll 111. Make all checks out to Carolina Debating Union.
There will be two "general assemblies" for students and coaches.
1. Carroll 111 will be open beginning at 7 AM. We will be posting pairings here throughout the day (and through Speechwire). The awards ceremony will also be in this room. Students and Coaches are free to remain here throughout the day.
2. Frank Porter Graham Student Union will be opening at 8 AM, and students will be free to assemble on the lower two floors of the Student Union before, in-between, and after rounds.
Judges should also check-in in Carroll 111. The Judges Lounge will be in rooms 3203 and 3205 in the Student Union, but the Student Union will not open until 8 AM, so judges should first arrive at Carroll 111 when they come to campus. Breakfast and Lunch will be served for judges in the judges lounge.

Food/Concessions
There will be three places to purchase food in and right next to the Student Union
1. Wendys - First floor of the Student Union
2. Alpine Bagel - Second floor of the Student Union - has bagels, sandwiches, and salads
3. The Pit Stop - Right outside of the second floor of the Student Union - has Mediterranean Platters, Sandwiches, Wraps, Soda, Chips, Donuts, etc.
Both Alpine Bagel and the Pit Stop have a plethora of veggie and vegan options, but if none of these work for your team, Lenoir Dining Hall is also right next to the Student Union.
Students should not go to Franklin Street for food in between rounds, and the tournament will not slow down to wait for people to get back from Franklin.
