Parking

Buses will be directed to park in the student parking area on the left side of the school (via Pleasantburg & Augusta Roads, the students parking lot will be the first entrance on the right, via Whitehorse Road, second entrance on left), Parents dropping off students should proceed through the car line at the main entrance of the school (look for the electronic markee) and all other vehicles may park in either of the two (staff or student) lots.


Registration

All entries should be made through SPEECHWIRE.  Entries must be completed by 6:00 PM on Wednesday, February 3rd. Drop fees will be calculated from this point forward. Teams with entries may continue to add entries, if necessary, until 1:00PM on Thursday, February 4th.    

Entries will be accepted on a first come, first serve basis until we reach space limits.

Tournament registration/check-in will take place in the attendance office (after you enter the school, the attendance office is to the right) and will begin at 7:30 AM and end at 8:15 AM. Please make every effort to arrive and register within that timeframe.

Judges

We will recruit several judges from the Southside community and faculty and provide them with a training session prior to the tournament; however, we ask that you meet the judge quotas and finalize all judges in Speechwire by 8:00pm on Thursday, February 4th. We will have a quick, 15 minute judge training/overview session prior to Round 1. Judges will enjoy complimentary "food for the soul" in the hospitality room (media center).

Judge Quotas

Debate Judges: One judge for every two entries.
Speech/Interp Judges: One judge for every five entries.
Congress Judges: One judge for every eight entries. 

Fees

School Fee - $25.00 
LD Debate - $15.00 / student
PF Debate and Duo Interpretation - $30.00 / pair
Congress - $15.00 / student
Speech/Interp. - $15.00 / student
Uncovered Judges - $75.00/debate judge, $50.00/speech judge, $25.00/congress judge                                                                                                                  

If a competitor drops after Wednesday, February 3rd at 6:00 PM, the school will forfeit the entry fee. 
Any drops made on Saturday, February 6th will be charged a $25.00 one time drop fee in addition to the original entry fee.
Substitutions for the same event may be made on Saturday during the in-person registration with no penalty.  There will be NO ADDS at registration.

Debate Resolutions
Novice and Varsity Lincoln-Douglas Debate will use the January/February topic.

2016 January/February LD Resolution
Resolved: In the United States, private ownership of handguns ought to be banned.

Novice and Varsity Public Forum Debate will use the February topic.

2016 February PF Resolution
Resolved: The United States federal government should adopt a carbon tax.

Event Rules

All events will follow NSDA and SCFCA guidelines except for Declamation (CFL) and Radio Speaking (NC).

Novice Definition: In all events except for Novice Lincoln-Douglas Debate, a novice will be defined as a student who has not competed in a high school speech and debate competition prior to the 2015-16 school year. Novice Lincoln-Douglas Debate: Any student may participate in Novice Lincoln-Douglas Debate unless he or she competed in Lincoln-Douglas debate in a previous contest year.

Double/Triple Entry: No double-entry in LD, PFD, or Congressional Debate will be permitted. Triple entries are permitted in all speech events.  Those students in Extemporaneous Speaking are limited to multiple entries in Impromptu and/or Radio Speaking. Students double or triple entering may not use a different selection in each event entered.

Computer Usage: Contestants are not permitted online access of any form inside the Extemp Prep Room, during debate rounds, or in the Congress chambers. Southside HS is and will not responsible for lost, stolen, damaged, or broken computers.

We reserve the right to cancel events, merge divisions and/or include or dispose of rounds beyond preliminary rounds that do not have enough entries.
 

Concessions

Students will have the opportunity to purchase breakfast, snacks, and lunch concessions throughout the day. Teams are asked to stay on campus for lunch.

 

Awards

Trophies/Plaques will be given to the top six contestants in each event. Team trophies will include at minimum the top 3 overall sweepstakes winners, a small school award winner as well as the Tiger Spirit Award.
