4th Annual Invitational Speech Tournament
Hoosier Heartland/Hoosier Crossroads NSDA District Congress
Saturday, February 20, 2016
Location: Joint campus of IUPUC and Ivy Tech (for online map reference, please use 4555 Central Ave., Columbus, IN 47203)
Time: First round starts 8:30am (extemp prep at 8am).
Format: Four straight rounds of competition
Events: Broadcasting, Declamation, Discussion, Dramatic, Humorous, Impromptu, IX, Prose, Poetry, Original Oratory, Original Performance, Memorized Duo, Scripted Duo, and USX
We will be running District Congress for both Hoosier Heartland and Hoosier Crossroads concurrently with the speech tournament. Please DO NOT register District Congress competitors and judges through Speechwire.
Doubling: Permitted in all events except for Discussion.
Discussion: Artifacts will be released one week prior to the meet. They can be found in the “Files to Download” section of SpeechWire. There will be no prep time prior to the start of the round.
Broadcasting: Rd. 1—5 minute news program (competitors choose their own genre for music intros, outros); Rd. 2—2 minute original editorial on ethics in high school athletics; Rd. 3—same as round 1; Rd. 4—OTS (2-min prep, 2 min deliver).
Extemp: Draw rounds 1, 2, 3, and 4.
Each school is allowed 4 entries per event. Team entries will be capped at 25 per school. Overall cap for the tournament will be 250 entries total. We are doing this primarily because there aren’t many spaces available to congregate in large groups on the campus and because rooms will be allocated for district Congress.
Judges: Please provide one (1) judge for every 7 (seven) entries or fraction thereof. IUPUC and Ivy Tech will offer a pool of judges, which eases the requirement on schools bringing entries. Also, please register judges for the speech meet ONLY. Judges for the two district Congress tournaments should be registered through Joy of Tournaments.
Trophies will be awarded to the top ten teams, and ribbons to the top ten contestants in each event.
This meet will take place in three or four campus buildings—we encourage that your students wear comfortable shoes. Please make sure your teams are in authorized areas throughout the day.
Concessions will be available throughout the day. Fast food or restaurants of any kind are 2-5 miles away, so please avail yourselves of our concessions to help us offset the costs of our meet.
The meet will be managed through SpeechWire. Team registrations are due by Tuesday, Feb. 16, 2016, at 5pm. NSDA HH/HC District Congress entries should be entered in Joy of Tournaments. Deadline information can be found there.
