Dear Forensics Colleagues:

You are cordially invited to participate in the 3rd and 4th Valley Forensic League Tournaments of 2015-2016, to be held Saturday, January 30 and Sunday, January 31, 2016 in the Fargo-Moorhead area. The VFL #3 will be held on the campus of Concordia College in Moorhead, Minn., and the VFL #4 will be at North Dakota State University in Fargo.  Competition is being offered in all 11 AFA individual events for each part of the swing and Parliamentary Debate competition will be held over two days. Lunch will be provided for you and your teams each day.

The entry deadline is TUESDAY, January 26, 2016 BY 5:00 p.m.  A nuisance fee of $10.00 will be assessed to changes made after 12:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 27.  Entries should be completed on Speechwire.com.

The VFL will recognize the finalists in each event, the top novice competitor in each event, and the top 3 teams.

• Membership in the VFL is $50 for this year. This fee covers all entry fees (but not uncovered judging fees) for the season and meals. One judge covers six individual events slots or a portion thereof. Schools are asked to try to cover all slots to cut down on hired judging costs.

• All judges are expected to assist in judging final rounds.

• Each uncovered individual event slot will incur a $12 fee.

• A $20.00 fee will be charged for each slot changed at registration.

We hope that you and your team will attend. If you have any questions, concerns, or need accommodations, please feel free to contact any member of the Executive Committee.

Events and Conflict Patterns:
The tournaments will be using the AFA Individual Events rules.

Saturday and Sunday Flights

Flight A: Dramatic Duo, After Dinner Speaking, Prose Interpretation, Informative Speaking, Impromptu Speaking

Flight B: Program Oral Interpretation, Dramatic Interpretation, Communication Analysis, Poetry Interpretation, Persuasive Speaking, and Extemporaneous Speaking

Parliamentary Debate: Those participating in Parliamentary Debate may not enter IEs on Saturday and are limited to three events in Flight A on Sunday.

While we have tried to minimize differences between both halves of the swing, there are two differences that we want to call to your attention:

·         On Saturday, students who enter Parliamentary Debate may not enter any IEs.

·         On Sunday, students who are entered in Parliamentary Debate may enter 3 events in Flight A.

·         IEers may enter up to three events in each flight each day.

There is 15 minutes between the start of extemp prep and the beginning of the round. If there are four or more double-entered extempers in a section, we’ll encourage at least one extemper to go to her/his other event first, which will still allow her/him enough time to draw, and it will help us complete the tournament earlier. If this situation occurs, we’ll let the involved students and coaches know.

There is no limit to the number of entries from a school in any event.  However, the tournament reserves the right to limit entries if necessary to balance the tournament.  Large entries in any single event will result in students from the same school competing in the same round, and sections may be adjusted to accommodate judging from large entry schools. Students are responsible for getting to all rounds in a timely manner.
