The Concordia University Forensics Team invites you and your team to the CUNE High School Speech Classic to be held on Saturday, January 23, 2016.  The tournament will offer all nine Nebraska School Activities Association (NSAA) events and impromptu speaking.  Registration will begin at 7:30am, with the first Extemp Draw at 8:15am and the first round of events at 9am.

Events will be divided into two flights.  Flight A events will include humorous prose, persuasive speaking, duet acting, poetry, and extemporaneous speaking.  Flight B events will include impromptu, informative, oral interpretation of drama, serious prose and entertainment speaking.  We are limiting entries to six per event per school.  Each student may participate in two events per flight.  Awards will be given for first through sixth places in each event’s final round.  Certificates will be given to all semi-finalists.  Sweepstakes awards will be given to the top three schools.  Additionally, with the support of our Admissions office, we are able to offer speech scholarships to top students who are interested in continuing their education and speech career at Concordia University, Nebraska.

NSAA rules will be followed on all events, with 45 minute prep for all in Extemp. Impromptu contestants will be given a choice of quotations for round one, an object for round two, and either a set of quotations or an object for the final round. The student may prep for 2-3 minutes to give a 4-6 minute speech. Total time is not to exceed nine minutes.

The fees for the tournament will be $5 per covered entry and $10 (total) for each uncovered entry. Additionally, there is a $3 per competitor fee for lunch. (Example: Six covered [$30] + 5 uncovered [50] + 9 meal fees [$27]= $107)  One judge covers six entries. Please plan to bring judges.

Lunch will be provided for the competitors.  There are also many vending machines around campus that have a wide selection of beverages and refreshments.

The deadline for your entry is no later than Monday, Jan. 18, at 5:00pm.  Fees will be assessed and confirmed by Tuesday, Jan. 19, at 3:00 pm.  There will be a $5 dropped entry fee for any changes made from Tuesday at 5:00 pm until Friday at 5:00 pm, and a $10 dropped entry fee for changes made after Friday at 5pm and at registration.

This year, we will be using SpeechWire for our entry registration—please look for the “CUNE High School Speech Classic” link/page in the tournament calendar, which will be available by the end of this week. If you have not used the site before, it is free to sign up and easy to enter your team members and events in which they plan to compete. If you have any questions about this process, please contact Andrew Moffitt at Andrew.moffitt@cune.edu

We are happy to invite you and your squads to compete during this busy season and are looking forward to seeing you in Seward on January 23, 2016!
