Dear colleagues,

 

We invite you to attend the 4th Richard J. Ernst Invitational for colleges and universities to be held on the Alexandria campus of Northern Virginia Community College. 

We are delighted to host an additional tournament sponsored by the Southern Northern Atlantic Forensic Union (SNAFU) on Sunday. 

Both tournaments will feature all eleven AFA sanctioned events and also parliamentary debate. 

Please review the following for more details about the tournament on Saturday. 

Registration.

1.  Each school may enter an unlimited number of conestants per event

2.   Students doing Parliamentary Debate are not permitted to double or triple enter in a pattern.  Debaters may only do debate.

3.   The maximum amount of individual events a student can enter in a pattern in three.  Two duos count as two events.  

4.   Groupings are as followed:  Pattern A (Extemp, POI, Prose, Informative, Persuasive, Duo, Parliamentary Debate);  B (Impromptu, Poetry, ADS, CA, DI, Parliamentary Debate)

5.  Semi-Finals will be held for individual events with over 42 entries.

6.   In debate after four rounds of prelims, we will advance the top teams to elimination rounds.   

6.  All entries must be submitted via Speechwire, no later than Wednesday January 20th, 2016 @ 3:00 p.m.  No adds will be permitted after this deadline.

Fees

1.  A fee of $8 will be charged per individual event slot

2.  A fee of $16 will be charged per each debate team

3.  One judge covers 6 slots.  For each slot uncovered an additional fee of $8 per uncovered slot will be applied. 

4.   Drop fees will be as followed:  $10 fee for each dropped slot after Thursday January 21st @ noon.   $40 fee for each dropped judge after Thursday January 21st, 2016 @ noon. 

5.  Please make checks payable to the Northern Virginia Community College. 

Awards.

1. Individual event awards will be presented to all finalists in events 

2.  A team sweepstakes award in Overall Team Sweepstakes and Debate Team Sweepstakes will be offered to the top five schools at the tournament.  

3.  Individual Sweepstakes Awards will be presented to the top five students at the tournament who are entered in at least two  diferent genres of events. 

4.  We will provide Debate Speaker Awards to the top five parliamentary debate speakers at the tournament. 

5. AFA tabulation rules are in place for Individual Events.    Debate teams will earn 3 points for each Prelim win and 6 points for each Elimination Round Win (Bronze Medal & Gold Medal Round).   

 

Other Notes

1.  Parking is free in the A and B lots that are adjacent to the Bisdorf Building. 

2.  Please remember the tournament will be held on the NOVA Alexandria, VA campus rather than one of NOVA's other 4 locations. 

3.  Due to the construction of a new meida arts and theatre building we reccomend teams enter the NOVA Alexandria campus from the Dawes Avenue entrance.

5.  NOVA will provide breakfast (typical fare) and light snacks throughout the day.  The cafeteria should be open on Saturday only in the afternoon.   In addition, there is a Panera Bread that does deliver to campus.  In addition there are several food options within driving distance to the campus. 

6.** Please note**,  To cater to our community college attendees for Saturday's Parliamentary Debate Tournament will follow Phi Rho PI Rules.   Five resolutions will be presented and both teams will take turns eliminating possible choices until the resolution for the round is chosen.  Once the resolution is known there will be a standard 15 minutes of preparation time allowed.  IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE NEW PHI RHO PI RULE, STUDENTS WILL BE ALLOWED TO CONSULT ELECTRONIC MATERIALS IN PREP TIME.   At the conclusion of preparation time, only hand written notes are allowed in the round.       The rules for Parliamentary Debate on Sunday's separate SNAFU tournament  will adhere to SNAFU rules.
