To All Speech & Debate Coaches:

The Shelbyville High School Speech and Debate team cordially invites you to attend our second annual speech meet.  The tournament will be held on Saturday, December 12, 2015.  Registration will be on speechwire.com.

All speech events (excluding Information,POI, and Versitility - including Improv Duo) Lincoln Douglas Debate, and Public Forum Debate will be offered. All IHSFA rules apply except as noted.

Extemp will draw rounds 1 and 3; topics will come from the major news magazines or major news events from September 1, 2015 forward. Students may use a note card.

Congress will use bills 6, 9, 10, & 12.

Radio needs to bring a two-minute news copy.  All other radio materials will be provided. Radio contestants will prep for both commercial and editorial. On the spot will come from a recent USA Today (print or online). Round 1 newscast; round 2 commercial; round 3 editorial; round 4 on-the spot.

Discussion will follow the Socratic seminar format. The following general topic areas will be used: philosophy, art, history, and current events. The prompts will be given at the start of the tournament to all discussion competitors. Judges will be given essential questions that will be asked during the round as needed to spur discussion. Judges will be instructed to ask only the first question and allow the round to continue without interruption unless there is a big lull at which point he/she should ask another question from the list of essential questions.

Students may not double in discussion or congress. All other events may double at their own risk.  I will not be able to set the tournament to protect these competitors.  Students who miss a round may still compete but will not be eligible for awards.  Students doubling in radio or extemp may have to lose part of their prep time. Each student may be in only one duo; both duo partners may double.

Each school may enter up to 45 entries.  Schools may enter a maximum of five students in each event. Students will not be able to pick up drops from another school. Schools must provide one judge for every five entries or fraction thereof.  A failure to bring all assigned judges will make a team ineligible for sweepstakes.

The top ten schools and top ten students in each event will be awarded. Sweeps are based on 10 point for a first through 1 point for 10th. Awards will begin around 2:30.

Food will be available at the meet. This is how we fund the tournament and pay for the awards, the judges’ lounge, etc. Please do not bring in food and drinks for your team. Help us continue to be able to host by allowing us to meet our expenses for this tournament through concessions at this meet.

Registration is from 6:45-7:30 a.m.  Extemp draw and first round of all other events begin at 8:00 a.m.  There will be four straight rounds. Preregistration is due Monday, December 7th by 4:00 p.m. I will be using speechwire.com for registration and to run the meet. Please register names on speechwire.
