Dear Coach and Speakers,

Welcome to the BEN DAVIS GIANT SPEAKERS Invitational Speech Tournament on December 5th, 2015.  The meet will be held at Ben Davis High School located at 120 N Girls School Road, Indianapolis, IN 46214

REGISTRATION DEADLINE

All Registration will be done on www.speechwire.com. No emails, faxes or paper entries will be accepted. Entries must be received by Wednesday , December 2nd, 2015 by 5:00 PM.  Please make sure you included your email address with your entry so I can send you confirmation of your entry.  You will be allowed to make names changes and drops only after February 9th.

TOURNAMENT STRUCTURE

Speech competition will consist of three (3) preliminary rounds, a next-in and final round.  Debate competition will consist of four straight rounds.

Entry Per Team: 60 (40 speech and 20 debate)   Please do not enter more than the allowed amount without consent of the tournament host)

Event Limitation: None. You can bring as many students in any event as long as you do not breach the team cap as defined above

Non- Sweeps Team Allowed: NO

Pickup Drops Allowed: NO

 

TOURNAMENT RULES:

·         We will follow the rules established for IHFSA with the following exceptions:

o   Discussion is limited to 30 minutes only.

o   Students may enter up to 4 events at their own risk – no more than two events per flight

NOTE:  After 1st the first flights (A&B) are completed, any student missing a round will be ranked last in the round by the office. We will not re-run any round because a student missed the round.

o   Extempers may double or triple in another extemp or impromptu only.  Those doubled in Impromptu MUST go to Impromptu last.

DISCUSSION

We will be using the Socratic Seminar format.  Artifacts will be posted on the Speechwire for download on November 25th, 2015. No electronic devices will be allowed to be used or seen in the round.  Students who bring electronic devices to the round will be instructed to place those devices on a table away from the competition until the round is over.  *****New Discussion students may double in Flight A events only.

 

EXTEMP

Extemp will draw each round.

 

RADIO

We will follow the new radio format.  The radio prompts will be available on Wednesday, November 25th, 2015 after 5:00 pm.  Radio students can quadruple.  If a radio student doubles in Flight B, the student must go to radio 1st.

DEBATE EVENTS OFFERED/DETAILS

Teams are allowed to bring entries in Lincoln Douglas debate, Policy, Public Forum Congressional Debate and World School’s debate.  Teams should bring no more than 4 entries in all events except Congress (5 entries) and World School’s debate (1 entry per school). The entry cap for debate is 20.  If the school is solely a debate program, please contact me directly via my email, fred.douse@wayne.k12.in.us to discuss an increase in team entry slots.

Congressional Debate Bills– Congress will debate 6 bills split evenly between each the morning and afternoon session. Morning Bills are 6, 11, and 13.  Afternoon Bills are: 2, 7, and 8. 

World School’s Debate Topic: Mental health and the American prison systems

World School’s Debate Format (NEW - UPDATED 11/11/2015)

We will use the following format:

-  Round 1 - Impromptu

                                  - Round 2 - Prepared - Topic -  This house believes that funding for mental health systems should be limited.

                                  - Round 3 - Prepared - Topic -  This house would reorganize American prison systems.

                                  - Round 4 -Impromptu

Registration - 7:00 am - 8:00 AM

Judges Meeting - 8:00 AM - 8:30 AM

BALLOT RETURN

All judges should return their signed and properly scored ballots and completed critique sheets at the end of each round to the ballot table located in the S HALL.  Judges are expected to stay for the entire meet and the entire round.  COACHES: Scores will not be posted however; ballots will be available throughout the day for you to record scores as we go.

 

CONCESSIONS

There should be no leaving the building as food for students will be served in the cafeteria. Complimentary food for judges, coaches and bus drivers will be Le Gallery.

 

JUDGE REQUIREMENTS

Each school MUST bring one judge for every 5 contestants and every fraction thereof. Teams that do not bring enough judges may be disqualified from the tournament sweepstakes awards.  

 

AWARDS (estimated time of awards 5:30 PM)

Our tournament is dedicated toward the individual achievement so team sweepstakes trophies will not be given.  We will acknowledge the Top 5 schools in both speech and debate.

So, who gets trophies?  The kids.  We will be awarding trophies to the top 5 individual contestants with the most number of points (An incentive to double or even quadruple).  Tournament Event Champions will receive a ribbon and medal.  The TOP 12 students (Next-In and Finals) will receive ribbons.
