Canterbury Middle School Speech Invitational

You are cordially invited to Canterbury Middle School for our first Invitational.  For this event on Saturday, November 21st, your preregistration is needed by Tuesday, November 17th, at 2:30 PM .  Unfortunately, due to the size of our building, entries are limited.  Requests received after the limit is met, will be returned with regrets.

Events Offered: We will offer all IHSFA Middle School Speech events. Each event will compete in three straight rounds.  Awards will be given after scores are computed through Speech Wire following the third round.  Extemporaneous topics will be taken from September 1st through November 15th issues of Time and Newsweek.  Students will draw thirty minutes before Round One.  Contestants will present the same speech each round.  Discussion will use the topic “Refugees from the Middle East trying to get into Greece, England and European countries.

Round 1. Do the European countries have a moral obligation to accept
Middle Eastern asylum seekers?
Round 2. What impact might Middle Eastern asylum seekers have on
national security for European nations?
Round 3. How will Middle Eastern asylum seekers impact European
economies and social issues?

Radio contestants will need to bring with them a two minute newscast with sections on state, national, and international news.  All other events will follow IHSFA Middle School rules.

Doubling: Students may not double in Discussion.  Extemp students may not double in Radio and vice versa.  Both Duo partners may double, however, they may not double in another duo.  Everyone doubles at their own risk; no rounds will be repeated.

Entries: Please, no more than 48 entries per school.  Drops will not be picked up.  Please, no more than 5 entries per event.  It may be possible that in some events students from the same school may have to compete with someone from their own school.  We will try to avoid this if at all possible.  We have to limit our meet to around 250 entries.

Judges: Please bring one judge for every 5 entries or fraction thereof (6 entries = 2 judges).  High School students who have 150 NFL points may judge; please indicate student judges on your entry.  Bringing the requested number of judges ensures your team’s entry into the final sweepstakes awards.

Food: Concessions will be available for purchase.  We do ask that you take advantage of this amenity in order to supplement our program’s funds used for trophies, ribbon, and future speech pieces.

Awards: Team trophies will be given to the top five teams.  Ribbons for each event will be given to the top eight places.

Online Pre-registration: Pre-registration will be done via speechwire.com.  Each school will receive its individual registration code via email.  You will receive instructions on how to register through that website.  No other forms of registration will be accepted.

Final Registration:  Registration will be in front of the main office from 8:00 AM to 8:30 AM.  Announcements will be held in the cafeteria at 8:40 for all contestants and judges.  Extemp draw will be held at 8:30.  Round One for all events will begin at 9:00 AM.
