NYCUDL May MS PF and Policy Debate Tournament

On behalf of the New York City Urban Debate League & KIPP-AMP, you are cordially invited to the NYCUDL May MS PF and Policy Debate Tournament on May 2nd, 2015 for a day of exciting, fun and intense debate excitement.

 

We will offer two debate formats: Public Forum, featuring 4 rounds of debate of public forum debate and policy debate.

 

Judges’ training will be available for individuals interested in judging public forum and policy debate.

ONLINE REGISTRATION DEADLINE FOR ALL ENTRIES IS 5PM – April 29rd, 2015

 

Once registration is closed on Wednesday April 29th at 5pm, you may still drop or change the names of your entries and judges, but you may not add any additional names.

Judging Assignment

Each school must provide one judge for every four teams competing.

 

There will be judge training for new/inexperienced judges.  Providing a judge for training may also count toward fulfillment of your judging assignment. 

 

Judges must check in on the morning of the tournament by 9:00am, the latest.

Divisions offered

 

The tournament will offer the following divisions for the following events:

Public Forum – Beginner, Advanced & Rookie (for new schools competing in PF for the first time)

Policy Debate – Beginner & Advanced

 

TOPICS

 

Public Forum:

April 2015 Topic – ISIS/ISIL – Resolution – Resolved: Committing United States ground combat troops to fight ISIL is in the best interest of the United States.

 

Policy Debate

NSDA 2014-2015 Topic: Oceans – Resolution: The United States federal government should substantially increase its non-military exploration and/or development of the Earth’s oceans.

LATE ARRIVAL POLICY

 

Once check-in closes (at 9:00am) – late arrivals will forfeit the first round and will debate round 2 (even if only late by a few minutes).  During round 1, late arrivals should observe and flow debates.

 

We must emphasize this rule in order to have an efficient, timely and well-managed tournament.  Please oblige to this request. 

 

AWARDS

 

Speaker points will be on the scale of 30 points.

 

We will provide awards for top speakers, top teams and sweepstakes for top schools.  Sweepstakes will be calculated based on the school’s top 5 team entries.

Address: 1224 Park Place, 4th Floor (Housed in the MS 390/Maggie L. Walker Campus)

 

Public Transportation and Car

By Subway (3/4): From Crown Heights-Utica Avenue/Eastern Expressway: 
Walk west on Eastern Parkway to Troy and turn right. 
Turn left onto Sterling for the main entrance to the school. 
M.S. 390 is at the beginning of the block on the right.
KIPP AMP is on the 4th floor.

By Car: From Brooklyn Bridge: 
Upon exiting Brooklyn Bridge, Brooklyn Bridge becomes Brooklyn Bridge Blvd. 
Turn left onto Atlantic Avenue. 
Turn right onto Schenectady.
Turn right onto Sterling. The entrance to the school is on Sterling. 
KIPP AMP is on the 4th floor.

By Car: From Triboro Bridge: 
Merge onto Brooklyn-Queens Expressway/I-278 West. 
Take exit 4 to Verrazano Bridge. 
Stay to the right, and take exit 31 towards Wythe Avenue/Kent Avenue.
Turn left at first light, onto Whythe. Whythe turns into Franklin.
Turn left onto Atlantic Avenue.
Turn right onto Schenectady.
Turn right onto Sterling. The entrance to the school is on Sterling.
KIPP AMP is on the 4th floor.

By Car: From Whitestone Bridge: 
Take exit 7 to Jackie Robinson Parkway West.
Stay straight to go onto Granville Payne Avenue/Pennsylvania Avenue.
Turn right onto Atlantic Avenue.
Turn left onto Schenectady.
Turn right onto Sterling. The entrance to the school is on Sterling.
