Dear Area Speech Coaches--

You are cordially invited to the New Castle Speech Tournament, Take 2--the Valentine's Day addition. If you have attended my tournament before, please note that this is a simplified version of my meet. We are only offering the regular sectional/state speech events: broadcasting, drama, humor, discussion, OP, OO, Dec, mem duo, scripted duo, prose, poetry, impromptu, USX, and IX (No congress, no versatility, etc.) To help you in making final decisions for your sectional team, I will allow teams to enter as many as they wish in any given category with a maximum of 40 total entries. Students are allowed to double enter at their own risk in all events except for discussion. Keep in mind, students doubling in the extemps and radio may find it difficult to make both events in the time scheduled. If a student misses a round, he/she will be eliminated for awards for that event but may still compete in later rounds for the experience and/or points for NSDA. Students may NOT compete in more than one duo.

Discussion--texts for individual rounds will be posted and notification sent out through speechwire before the tournament. Just FYI--the history round will be about Valentine's Day (for kids who want to get researching early).

Radio--students need to bring a 2-minute newscast based on stories not older than one-week (round 2), a one-minute editorial about impact of storms/natural disasters on the economy (round 3), and a one-minute commercial about Hampton Inn (round 4). Last round will be on-the-spot. There will also be a 5th round, breaking news  (which contestants will see again at sectional), which we will actually run 1st round. The script will be provided. It is basically a cold read. Recap--round 1 and 5 material provided; bring prepped materials for round 2, 3, and 4 as noted above.

Extemp--will draw round 1 and 3 only. If numbers are small, the extemps may be combined for competition, but still separated for awards if we need to save a judge.

Judges--1 for every 5 entries or fraction thereof. Smaller schools, if you have extra judges, we could definitely use them. (Because this is going to be a small meet, we may have to have judges judging kids from their own school, but a parent/relative will definitely NOT judge his/her own child.) Also, if any (but especially the bigger schools) have judges who don't know your kids, please mark them as clean and/or send me an email telling me who they are and that they are clean.

Ribbons will be given to the top 10 in each event. Some sort of team awards will also be given. I am tyring to find an option that will not cost too much money. :)

Please register on-line by Monday, Feb. 9 at 4 p.m. I will leave it open for drops/adds through Thursday, so if between Monday and Thursday you have changes, please go into speechwire and make the changes. Please be as accurate as possible with your original entries as I will use that to order food, get drinks, set up rooms, etc.

Registration will be from 7-7:30 a.m. with first round and extemp prep starting at 8 a.m. Awards are schedule for 2.

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE do not bring food and drink into the school for your kids. We have to pay the cost of a custodian and cover other expenses of running a meet. The only way we have to do this is through food sales in the cafeteria. Please help us out by planning on eating lunch with us. Thank you!
