Welcome to the Skeffington Memorial Tournament!

Dear Coach,

You are invited to Chesterton’s Skeffington Memorial Tournament on Saturday, February 21nd, 2015.  Registration will be on SpeechWire (www.speechwire.com).  We will offer all 14 events.  You may enter up to 60 entries, but no more than 7 per event.  Students in all events except discussion may double at their own risk.  (We’ll try to minimize the risks.)  You may also triple enter up to four students.

We will have three rounds and a final in all events.  If the size of an event warrants it, a semi-final round may be held; the office will make this call the day of the tournament.    Once again, everyone should sign up to judge a final round (some judges will be pre-assigned based on areas of expertise) regardless of having students involved in the event.  From that pool, the office will select panels for final rounds.  At this point we need input from everyone; no coach or judge should be sitting in the lounge drinking coffee during these final rounds.  We will have up to five judges per final round.  Check postings so you know how many will be assigned.  Your student may be performing for you.  It is often frightening for students to perform in front of their coaches, but if they can handle your presence, they will be able to handle almost anything.  To avoid confusion, please warn your students of this policy.  We hope to have awards by 4:00 p.m.

Please bring one judge for every five entries (6 entries = 2 judges).  Judges will be asked to write clear, logical critiques for the students.  Students need to understand the reason for their rank.  We will not have timekeepers; judges should use stopwatches to time students.  If the judge does not have a stopwatch he/she should announce to all students that time will not be kept.

Discussion topics will be posted on SpeechWire on Monday, February 16th.

Duo Both duo partners may double, but not in another duo.

Extemp questions will come from December 1st through February 16th current events.  Draw rounds one and three-choice of round one or three topic for final.

Radio contestants will be provided with all necessary materials.  Round one will be news, round 2 commercial, round three editorial, and final will be on-the-spot.

Bring Stop watches We will not have any time keepers.  Please do not time with wall clocks or sweep-hand watches.

Registration (Remember we are on Chicago Time).  Registration is on SpeechWire, and once again, entries are due by Tuesday, February 17, 2014 at 5:00 CST.  We will leave SpeechWire open for drops only until Friday the 20st.   Drops, however, will not change your judging obligation based on your original entry.  Final registration will be from 7:00-7:45 a.m. on the 21nd.

Extemp draw and all rounds except impromptu will begin at 8:00.  Round 1 of extemp will be at 8:30 and impromptu will begin at 11:45.

We will have food service in the cafeteria.  Please remain in the building.  If you have any questions contact me at robert.kelly@duneland.k12.in.us.

Important:  Please call in any drops you have by 7:30 (CST) Saturday morning to Robert Kelly at C219-929-8566, or text any drops to Kirsten Reed at 219-929-8528. If you know of drops or name changes prior to Saturday morning email Robert Kelly.  There will not be any drops to pick up on the day of the tournament.
